Replace the Key Fob Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk8 (CU/CW) 2008-2015.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

When the Accord’s remote starts working only up close, or the key-indicator warning appears, the fob battery is flat. It takes a single coin cell — a CR1616 — and a couple of minutes, with no reprogramming needed afterward.

The same procedure applies to the North American Accord (2008–2012) — see the US guide.

How to replace the key fob battery on a Honda Accord (2008–2015)

  1. Slide out the metal emergency key from the remote (this also releases the case on most fobs).
  2. Gently prise the fob apart at the seam with a small flat screwdriver or a coin.
  3. Lift out the old cell and fit a new CR1616, matching the polarity (+ side usually faces up).
  4. Click the case back together and reinsert the metal key.
  5. Press the lock or unlock button five or six times near the car to re-sync the remote, then test it.

A simple battery change does not wipe the remote’s coding, so no dealer or reprogramming is required — pressing the buttons a few times re-establishes the link with the car.

If the remote still will not operate the locks after a fresh battery, check the cell is seated and the right way round. Adding a brand-new key is different — that needs immobilizer registration with dealer equipment and is not a DIY job.

Frequently asked questions

What battery does the Accord key fob use?

A single CR1616 3-volt coin cell. Always check the marking on the old cell as you remove it, and fit the same type.

Do I need to reprogram the remote after changing the battery?

No. The fob keeps its coding through a battery change; pressing lock/unlock a few times re-syncs it. Reprogramming is only needed when adding a new or replacement key.

The remote still doesn’t work with a new battery — why?

Check the cell is the correct CR1616 and seated with the right polarity. If it still fails, the fob may have water damage, or the car’s receiver needs checking — a new key requires dealer registration.
