Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk9 (CR) 2013-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2013–2017 Honda Accord you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment, with a condition sensor on the negative terminal.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last.
  5. Reactivate the audio system (enter the code if prompted) and reset the clock.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last — and reconnect a replacement of the same specification.

Why the sensor on the negative terminal?

It monitors battery condition; a fault shows a message on the driver display. Don’t ground accessories to the post — use the body.

What resets afterward?

The audio system and clock; on some trims the navigation needs its code too.

If your Accord stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
