Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk9 (CR) 2013-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2013–2017 Honda Accord cranking. Ground the last clamp to the engine mounting bolt, not the dead battery. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Switch off accessories and the engine; park a 12 V donor close but not touching.
  2. Red (+) to the Accord’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
  3. Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to the engine mounting bolt on the Accord (the marked ground point) — not any other part.
  4. Start the donor and raise its rpm slightly, then start the Accord. Remove the cables in reverse order (ground first).

FAQ

Where is the ground point?

The engine mounting bolt shown in the manual — not the dead battery’s negative post.

Booster requirements?

Use a 12-volt source only; raise the donor’s rpm a little before cranking.

It won’t hold a charge.

Have the battery and alternator tested.

If your Accord stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
