Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk4 (RM) 2012-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Honda CR-V Mk4 (RM/RE, 2012–2018) — Honda’s fourth-generation compact SUV, sold across Europe with 2.0 i-VTEC petrol, 1.6 i-DTEC diesel, and 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engines, built in Swindon (UK) for European markets — uses Honda’s i-MID (Intelligent Multi-Information Display) menu-driven service reset. The procedure is the same Maintenance Minder system used across the wider Honda lineup of the era (Civic Mk9, Jazz Mk3, HR-V), driven through the steering-wheel INFO and SEL/RESET buttons. No diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • If the wrench / spanner icon with “SERVICE” or maintenance code appears on the i-MID at startup.
  • If you bought the CR-V second-hand and the previous owner didn’t clear the indicator.

⚠️ Like other Hondas of the era, the CR-V Mk4 uses Honda’s Maintenance Minder system. The i-MID shows codes like A1, B12, B16 (see the FAQ below). Clear only the codes that match work you’ve actually completed — each represents a different service item.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
  • Complete the actual maintenance work before the reset.
  • Identify the steering-wheel controls. The CR-V Mk4’s multifunction wheel has:
    • INFO button — on the right-hand spoke, marked with an “i” icon. Used to scroll through menu options.
    • SEL/RESET button — also on the right spoke, marked with a selection / reset icon. Used to enter and confirm.
  • On lower trims without multifunction controls (very basic 2.0 petrol SE), the same procedure uses cluster-mounted equivalents — INFO button on the cluster face plus a SEL/RESET combo button.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change: fresh Honda-spec oil — 0W-20 ACEA C2 / Honda Genuine 0W-20 for the 2.0 i-VTEC petrol, 5W-30 ACEA C2 / C3 for the 1.6 / 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engines (DPF-compatible); a new spin-on filter (different parts between R-series petrol and N-series diesel); a 17 mm sump-plug socket (petrol) or 19 mm (i-DTEC); a torque wrench rated to about 40 Nm (petrol) or 30 Nm (i-DTEC).

Service Indicator Reset — Step-by-Step

  1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition ON with the engine off:
    • Key-start CR-V: turn the key to position II.
    • Start/Stop button CR-V: press the START/STOP button without your foot on the brake or clutch (pedal pressure cranks the engine).
  3. Wait a moment for the i-MID to fully wake. The SERVICE or maintenance-required text should be visible if overdue.
  4. Press the INFO button on the right-hand steering-wheel spoke. The i-MID switches to the menu navigation view.
  5. Press MENU (or continue INFO press cycles on trims without a dedicated MENU button).
  6. Use the volume +/– rocker (or the up/down rocker on facelift cars) to scroll through the menu list.
  7. Highlight “VEHICLE INFO”.
  8. Press the SEL/RESET button to confirm and enter.
  9. Inside Vehicle Info, scroll and highlight “Maintenance info”.
  10. Press SEL/RESET to confirm.
  11. The i-MID shows the Maintenance Info screen with the service item due.
  12. Press SEL/RESET again. A confirmation prompt appears.
  13. Scroll to highlight “YES”.
  14. Press SEL/RESET to confirm. The service indicator clears for that item.
  15. If multiple items are due (e.g., a B12 code = oil + tyre rotation + air filter), the next due item appears. Repeat from step 11 for each item you’ve completed.
  16. Switch the ignition off to exit.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on. The SERVICE / spanner warning at startup should be gone. Re-open the Maintenance Info menu (INFO → Vehicle Info → Maintenance info) — the item you reset should show a fresh percentage (typically 100% with 12,000 miles / 20,000 km remaining) for the European-spec CR-V Mk4 on the standard Maintenance Minder schedule.

Troubleshooting

  • The i-MID stays on the SERVICE warning screen and doesn’t switch to the menu when I press INFO. The CR-V i-MID needs the SERVICE message to be acknowledged first — press INFO once to dismiss the warning text, then press again to enter the menu navigation. On some Mk4 facelift cars (post-2015), press the warning-acknowledge button on the dashboard instead.
  • I cleared the warning but the spanner symbol comes back on the next start. Most likely: more than one Maintenance Minder item is due — you cleared only one. The Mk4 CR-V shows the spanner for any pending item, not just the highest-priority one. Cycle through all the Maintenance Reset items in the menu and clear each you’ve completed.
  • SEL/RESET just resets the trip computer. The SEL/RESET button is dual-function: a quick press in the trip-computer view resets the trip A/B; a longer press (about 1 second) in the menu view confirms the selection. Hold for a full second.
  • Reset works but spanner returns after a few miles. 12V battery condition. The CR-V Mk4 cluster is sensitive to cold-crank voltage drop. Load-test the battery; replace if older than 5 years.
  • I drive a 2.2 i-DTEC CR-V — same procedure? Yes. The 2.2 i-DTEC engine option uses the same i-MID and the same Maintenance Minder logic as the 2.0 petrol and 1.6 i-DTEC. Procedure unchanged.
  • 2015 facelift CR-V (RE-series refresh) — same procedure? Yes. The 2015 facelift added the 9-speed automatic on the 1.6 i-DTEC, refreshed the front-end styling, and added some interior trim revisions — but kept the i-MID firmware and Maintenance Minder structure unchanged.
  • 4WD CR-V — same procedure? Yes. The Real Time AWD selector adds menu entries elsewhere but doesn’t change the maintenance-reset path. The transfer-fluid sub-item (Maintenance Minder item 3) is the only AWD-related entry — reset it after a transfer-fluid change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on the Honda CR-V mean?

On the Mk4 CR-V the spanner / wrench icon is the Maintenance Minder reminder. It illuminates when one or more service items are due. The Maintenance Minder uses the engine ECU’s algorithm to track items based on driving conditions, not just fixed mileage. The icon does not indicate an engine fault.

What are the Honda Maintenance Minder codes (A1, B12, etc.)?

Same codes as other Honda models. The letter indicates the main service:

  • A: Engine oil + filter
  • B: Engine oil + filter + inspection items (tyres, brakes, suspension)

The numbers add sub-items:

  • 1: Tyre rotation
  • 2: Air cleaner + cabin filter + drive belt + dust filter
  • 3: Transmission fluid + transfer fluid (4WD only)
  • 4: Spark plugs + valve lash check
  • 5: Engine coolant
  • 6: Differential fluid (4WD only)

A code like “B16” means: oil change + inspection + tyre rotation + differential fluid (4WD).

How often does the CR-V Mk4 service indicator come up?

Honda’s official European-market schedule for the CR-V Mk4 (Maintenance Minder adjusts to driving conditions, so these are typical ranges):

  • 2.0 i-VTEC petrol: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.6 i-DTEC diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 2.2 i-DTEC diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving can pull the Maintenance Minder’s predicted interval down to 9,000 miles or less — the algorithm does adjust.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the Maintenance Minder counter only. Engine fault codes (P0xxx etc.) are stored in the engine ECU and need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

What about the CR-V Mk5 (RW/RT, 2017+)?

The fifth-generation CR-V (RW/RT, 2017 onwards) moved to the newer Honda Display Audio infotainment system and the reset path moves to the central touchscreen: Home → Settings → Vehicle → Maintenance Info → Reset. Same Maintenance Minder logic underneath, different UI. We’ll publish a dedicated Mk5 guide.

And the Mk3 CR-V (RE, 2006–2012)?

The Mk3 CR-V uses an older cluster with a button-and-hold sequence on the trip-reset button rather than the i-MID menu. Different procedure — see our forthcoming Mk3 CR-V guide.

Is the procedure similar to the Honda Civic Mk9?

Yes. The Honda Civic Mk9 (FK, 2012–2017) shares the CR-V Mk4’s i-MID firmware and uses the same INFO → Vehicle Info → Maintenance Info → Reset path. Same Maintenance Minder codes. The Civic and CR-V articles are mostly interchangeable from a procedure standpoint.
