If the gear selector on your Honda Insight (ZE2, 2009–2014) will not move out of ‘P’ — usually because the 12 V battery is flat or the shift-lock has failed — there is a built-in shift-lock release that frees the lever so the car can be moved or towed. It takes a key and a screwdriver.
When you need it
The CVT lever normally only comes out of Park with the ignition on and your foot on the brake. If there is no power (dead 12 V battery) or the shift-lock solenoid sticks, the lever stays locked in P. The manual release lets you select neutral to roll or recover the car.
How to release the shift-lock
- Apply the parking brake (or chock the wheels) so the car cannot move once it is out of Park.
- Remove the key from the ignition.
- Beside the selector, prise out the small plastic cover over the shift-lock release slot — use a cloth-wrapped flat screwdriver so you do not mark the trim.
- Insert the ignition key (or a screwdriver) into the exposed slot and press down and hold.
- While holding it pressed, move the gear lever out of ‘P’ into N.
- Remove the key and refit the cover.
Important: the shift-lock releasing on its own points to a fault (often a flat battery or a brake-switch/solenoid issue). Once the car is safe, have the cause checked rather than relying on the override.

Why won’t my Honda Insight come out of Park?
The shift-lock needs power and a brake-pedal signal to release. A flat 12 V battery or a failed brake switch/solenoid leaves the lever stuck in P — use the manual shift-lock release to free it.
Where is the shift-lock release?
Under a small removable cover on the selector surround, next to the lever. Prise the cover off to reveal the slot you press with the key.
Is it safe to do myself?
Yes, with the parking brake applied first so the car stays put. It only unlocks the lever; it does not start or move the car by itself.
Do I need to fix anything afterwards?
Find out why it locked — most often a flat battery. Recharge or renew it (see our battery guide); if the battery is fine, have the brake switch and shift-lock checked.
