If the smart key for your Kia Niro Mk2 (SG2, 2022–present) only unlocks the car when you are standing right next to it, ignores the door handle sensor, or has stopped responding altogether, the cause is nearly always the small coin cell inside the fob rather than anything wrong with the car. The second-generation Niro — whether you have the hybrid, plug-in hybrid or the Niro EV — ships with a single style of proximity (keyless) smart key carrying a hidden emergency blade, so there is only one battery and one opening method to learn. How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying

  • Shrinking range. You have to be right beside the Niro — or hold the fob against the door handle — before it locks or unlocks. This gradual loss of range is the classic first sign.
  • Keyless entry and push-button start get fussy. The handle sensors stop recognising the key in your pocket, and the car may not detect the fob for the START button until you hold it close.
  • A “Key battery low” message. The Niro’s cluster shows a low-key-battery warning when the smart key voltage drops, giving you plenty of notice before it dies completely.
  • Cold-weather dropouts. A cell that is nearly flat struggles in low temperatures, so intermittent response on frosty mornings often means the battery is on its way out.

A CR2032 in a Niro smart key usually lasts two to four years. If yours is older than that and doing any of the above, fit a fresh cell before you start suspecting the receiver, the immobiliser, or the car’s own 12 V battery.

The Battery You Need

The Niro Mk2 smart key uses a single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell — the most common fob battery made, and stocked by any supermarket, hardware shop or petrol station. There is only the one keyless fob across the hybrid, PHEV and EV, so every SG2 takes the same cell. Buy a good branded battery: cheap cells sag under the brief burst of current the transmitter draws and can give poor range even when they read as “new”.

How to Change the Niro Mk2 Smart Key Battery

  1. Release the emergency blade. Slide the small catch on the side or back of the fob and pull the mechanical key blade straight out. It is hidden inside the smart key for exactly this kind of job, and you will use it as your opening tool.
  2. Split the case. Insert the tip of the emergency blade — or a slim flat plastic tool — into the slot the blade left behind, then gently twist to pop the two halves of the shell apart. Work your way round the seam rather than forcing one spot, so you do not snap a clip.
  3. Note how the old cell sits, then lift it out. Before you touch the new battery, look at which face of the coin cell is showing and how it clips in. Kia does not publish a fixed “+ up” or “+ down” rule for this fob, so the safe method is simply to copy the orientation of the cell you removed.
  4. Fit the new CR2032 the same way round. Handle it by the edges — finger grease on the flat faces can cause poor contact — and press it firmly under its clip so it seats fully.
  5. Close it up. Line the two halves back together and squeeze until every clip clicks home, then slide the emergency blade back in until it latches. Give all the buttons a press to confirm.

⚠️ Match the polarity of the cell you removed. A coin cell fitted the wrong way round will not power the transmitter and can slowly discharge against the contacts, leaving the key dead. Because the correct face is not marked in the owner’s handbook, copying the orientation of the old cell is the reliable way to get it right.

Did It Work?

Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the Niro with the buttons; full range should return straight away. Then test the keyless side — walk up with the fob in your pocket and try the door handle, and press the START button to confirm the car reads the key without you holding it against anything. The “Key battery low” message clears once the car next reads a healthy fob, sometimes after a short drive rather than the instant you swap the cell.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It

  • Re-check the orientation and seating. Fitting the cell upside down, or not pressing it fully under its clip, is by far the most common reason a “new” battery does nothing. Pop it out and compare against how the old one sat.
  • Clean the contacts. Wipe the metal terminals in the fob with a dry cloth; a smear of grease or a trace of corrosion is enough to cause dropouts.
  • Try the backup start method. If the car still will not detect the key, hold the fob directly against the START button and press — the Niro is designed to read a weak or flat key this way, which also tells you the fault is the fob, not the car.
  • Rule out the car’s 12 V battery. A weak vehicle battery can occasionally mimic key faults if the car is slow to wake. On the Niro EV and hybrids the 12 V auxiliary battery is worth checking separately if the whole car feels sluggish to respond.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job

Changing the coin cell leaves the fob’s existing coding untouched, so there is nothing to reprogram — the key works the moment the battery is in. Adding a spare or replacing a lost key is a different matter: the emergency blade has to be cut to your car, and a blank smart key must be paired to the Niro’s immobiliser with a diagnostic tool and the vehicle’s VIN. That makes a new or spare key a job for a Kia dealer or an auto-locksmith. The cheap insurance is to keep the battery in your spare key fresh too, so you are never down to a single working fob.
