Change Automatic Transmission Fluid A4CF1

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 31, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Kia Rio Mk3 (UB/QBR) 2011-2018.

The Kia Rio (2011–2018) with the A4CF1 4-speed automatic transmission requires the correct fluid level to ensure smooth shifting and long life. This unit does not have a traditional dipstick — fluid checks and refills are done through a check plug. This DIY guide explains how to drain, refill, and verify the ATF level safely.

What You Need

  • Socket and spanner set
  • Drain pan (minimum 5 L capacity)
  • Funnel with hose or fluid pump
  • New crush washer for the drain plug
  • Genuine Kia ATF SP-III or approved equivalent (about 4.0 L for a drain and fill)
  • Gloves and eye protection

Draining the Fluid

  1. Warm up the engine with a short drive to thin the fluid, then switch ignition OFF.
  2. Raise the car securely on stands and place the drain pan under the transmission.
  3. Remove the transmission drain plug and washer, and allow the fluid to drain completely.
  4. Refit the plug with a new washer and tighten to the specified torque (~40 Nm).

Refilling the Fluid

  1. Locate the ATF fill plug on top of the transmission.
  2. Remove the plug and insert a funnel with hose or use a pump.
  3. Add 3.5–4.0 L of Kia ATF SP-III.
  4. Reinstall the fill plug loosely for now.

Checking Fluid Level

  1. Start the engine and let it idle.
  2. Move the gear selector slowly through all positions (P → R → N → D → back to P), pausing for 2–3 seconds in each.
  3. With the engine idling and transmission warmed to ~50–60 °C, remove the check plug on the side of the transmission.
  4. If a small trickle of ATF runs out, the level is correct. If not, add fluid through the fill plug until it dribbles from the check plug.
  5. Reinstall and tighten the check plug.

Maintenance Notes

  • Replace the ATF every 60,000 km (37,000 miles) under severe conditions, or as recommended by Kia.
  • Only use ATF SP-III or approved equivalent — mixing fluids can cause shifting issues.
  • Inspect fluid color: clean fluid is red; dark or burnt fluid indicates overdue maintenance.
  • Dispose of used ATF properly at a recycling facility.
