If someone is shut inside the boot of your Kia Rio, or the tailgate will not open after a flat battery, a hidden mechanical release is built into the tailgate itself. It trips by hand, with no power and no tools. Here is where it is and how to use it.

Release the tailgate from inside
- Feel along the bottom inside face of the tailgate for the small trim cover carrying the open-car symbol. Slide its tab across and lift the cover away.
- Push the release lever firmly to the right until the latch lets go. A fingertip is enough — your car key works too.

Cover off, the white release lever is exposed. Push it to the right with a fingertip — the screwdriver shown here is only to point it out, no tool is needed. - Push the tailgate up and climb out.
Tailgate will not open from outside?
The Rio’s tailgate latch is mechanical, not electric, so a flat 12 V battery does not seal it shut. If your tailgate has its own key barrel, turn the key to unlock, press the handle and lift. On keyless cars there is no tailgate keyhole — slide the metal emergency blade out of the smart key and unlock the driver’s door with it, which releases the tailgate as well, then lift it by the handle.
FAQ
Where is the emergency boot release on a Kia Rio?
Low on the inside face of the tailgate, behind a small cover marked with an open-car icon. Pop the cover off and the white release lever is right there.
Do I need a screwdriver to open it?
No. The lever moves with a fingertip, and it is designed to be worked by hand or with your car key. The screwdriver in the photo is only there to show the lever clearly.
My Kia Rio’s tailgate will not open and the battery is dead — what now?
The latch is not powered, so a flat battery does not lock it shut. Unlock the car with the metal key (in the tailgate barrel if fitted, otherwise the driver’s door) and lift the tailgate by its handle. Only reach for the inside emergency lever if someone is shut in the load area.
Which Kia Rio does this cover?
The third-generation Rio hatchback (UB), 2011–2018. The cover and lever are the same across the range.
If a tailgate-ajar warning light stays on after you have shut the boot properly, the latch switch itself may be at fault — a quick scan will confirm it. See autodtcs.com for the trouble codes behind common body-control faults.
