Reset the Service Indicator

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 10, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Lancia Ypsilon Mk3 (846) 2011-2024.

Short answer: whether you can reset the service (“Scheduled Servicing”) reminder on the Lancia Ypsilon (846, 2011–2024) yourself depends on your car’s trip menu. On some Ypsilons the SET/MENU button opens a maintenance item you can clear from the dashboard; on others that item isn’t there and the reset is an OBD-II diagnostic-tool job — which is the only method the owner’s handbook recognises (“contact a Lancia Dealership where the operations of the ‘Scheduled Servicing Plan’ will be performed and the message will be reset”). Below: the SET-button method and when it works, the tool method that covers every car, and the costs.

What the “Service” Message Is

The Ypsilon tracks its scheduled-servicing plan electronically. The display shows a spanner symbol followed by the distance to the next service — automatically with the ignition at MAR-ON about 2,000 km before it is due (or around 30 days before, where fitted), and again each time the key is turned to MAR-ON. Once the service is carried out, that counter has to be reset or the message keeps returning.

The SET-Button Method (Where It’s Available)

Owner-reported, not a documented factory procedure — it works on some Ypsilons and not others, so treat it as worth a try rather than guaranteed:

  • With the ignition at MAR-ON, press the SET/MENU button on the dashboard to open the trip-computer menu.
  • Scroll the menu until you reach a service / maintenance item, if your car shows one.
  • Press and hold SET to clear it, then exit the menu and check the spanner message has gone.

If there is no maintenance item in your menu — or the message comes back — your car’s counter needs the tool method instead. Either way, make sure the service work was actually done; the reset only silences the reminder.

When You Need a Diagnostic Tool

On the Ypsilons whose menu has no maintenance-reset item, the service counter lives in the body computer and is only reachable over the OBD-II port. Professional workshop data lists the operation simply as “a diagnostic tool must be used” and the handbook sends you to a dealer — but with the right scanner it is a cheap DIY job, so you do not have to pay a dealer.

Where the OBD-II Port Is

The diagnostic socket is under the dashboard on the driver’s side, below the steering column — the same port used for fault-code reading and emissions testing. That is where the tool plugs in.

What the Job Looks Like With a Tool

  • Plug an FCA/Fiat-Lancia-capable scan tool into the OBD-II port with the ignition on, engine off.
  • Select the vehicle, then the service / oil-service reset function.
  • Confirm the reset — the spanner message clears straight away, and no drive cycle is needed.

The exact wording differs between the dealer system and consumer scanners, but it is the standard “service reset” function on any tool that covers Fiat and Lancia.

Dealer Cost vs Doing It Yourself

Prices vary by region; treat these as a guide for the reset on its own, not the service work:

OptionTypical costNotes
Lancia/Fiat dealer or independentA few minutes’ workNormally included when they carry out the service itself.
DIY — budget FCA OBD tool / cable + softwareLow one-off outlayDoes the service reset and reads Fiat/Lancia fault codes; the cheapest route if you service the car yourself.
DIY — multi-make service scannerMid-range one-off outlayStandalone; also covers oil-service resets on other makes.

Before You Start

  • Do the actual service first. Resetting the counter without carrying out the work just hides the real interval.
  • Check the tool explicitly lists Fiat/Lancia service (oil) reset before buying — a plain code reader that only shows faults will not do it.
  • Have the ignition on with the engine off when you run the reset.

Which kind of tool does this? (When links are live we may earn from qualifying purchases.)

The Ypsilon service reset needs a tool that covers Fiat/Lancia, not a generic fault-code reader. Two classes do it: a budget FCA OBD cable or app with software that includes service resets (cheapest if you already service the car), or a standalone multi-make service scanner that also handles oil-service resets on other cars. Whichever you pick, confirm it lists Fiat/Lancia service (oil) reset before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the Lancia Ypsilon service light without a tool?

On some Ypsilons, yes — if your trip menu includes a service/maintenance item, you can clear it with the SET button (see above). On cars where that item isn’t in the menu, the owner’s handbook and workshop data both require a diagnostic tool over the OBD-II port.

Doesn’t the SET/MENU button reset it?

It depends on the car. On some Ypsilons the menu carries a maintenance-reset item the SET button can clear; on others the menu only shows the distance to the next service and the counter has to be reset with a tool. Try the menu first — if there’s no maintenance item, use the tool method.

What tool resets the Ypsilon service reminder?

Any scan tool that covers Fiat/Lancia and lists a service / oil reset function — from a budget FCA OBD cable with software up to a multi-make service scanner. A basic code reader that only shows faults will not clear it.

Where is the OBD port on the Lancia Ypsilon?

Under the dashboard on the driver’s side, below the steering column — the same socket used for reading fault codes.

Will the reminder come back if I ignore it?

It will keep appearing at each MAR-ON until it is reset, but it is only a maintenance reminder, not a fault. It does not affect how the car runs; it is telling you the service interval has arrived.

If a warning light or fault code appeared alongside the service message, look it up on our sister site autodtcs.com to see whether it relates to a fault or just the service interval.
