Home/Lancia/Ypsilon/Mk3 (846) 2011-2024/Reset the Steering Angle Sensor

Reset the Steering Angle Sensor

These instructions apply to the Lancia Ypsilon Mk3 (846) 2011-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the ESP/stability or steering warning light has come on in your Lancia Ypsilon (846, 2011–2024) — commonly after a battery disconnection, a wheel alignment, or steering work — the steering angle sensor just needs re-zeroing. On the Ypsilon you can usually do this without a tool.

When You Need This

  • After disconnecting or replacing the battery.
  • After a wheel alignment or steering/suspension work.
  • When the ESP/steering warning light is on with no other fault.

Re-initialising the Sensor

  1. With the engine running, turn the steering wheel slowly from full lock to full lock, then centre it.
  2. Or simply drive the vehicle in a straight line for a short distance.
  3. The warning light should go out once the sensor has re-zeroed.

If the Light Stays On

  • Make sure the wheels are pointing straight when you finish.
  • Repeat the lock-to-lock turn, then drive a short distance.
  • Still lit? The sensor may need a tool to calibrate, or a fault is stored — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Ypsilon ESP light on after a battery change?

The steering angle sensor loses its zero point — turning lock to lock or driving straight re-zeros it.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

Often not — the lock-to-lock turn or a straight drive is usually enough; a stubborn light may need a tool.

Which warning light is this?

The ESP/stability control or steering warning, typically after battery or steering work.

Is it safe to drive?

Drive gently to complete the relearn, but if stability control is disabled, avoid hard cornering until the light clears.

If you’ve just done battery work, see our Ypsilon battery guide, and decode any stored fault on autodtcs.com.
