If the one-touch (automatic) up or down function on your Mazda 2 (DE, 2007–2014) has stopped working — usually after the 12 V battery was disconnected or a window motor lost power — the window needs re-initialising so it relearns its fully-open and fully-closed positions. It is a two-minute job with no tools.
Why one-touch stops working
The window module remembers the exact top and bottom stops. Cut the power — a flat battery, a disconnect, a blown fuse — and it forgets them, so the glass will still wind up and down while you hold the switch but the automatic one-touch (and often the anti-trap) no longer works. Re-initialising teaches it the limits again.
How to re-initialise a window
- Turn the ignition switch to the ‘ON’ position (engine not running is fine).
- Using the switch on the door, open the window.
- Press and hold the same switch in the ‘down’ direction and open the window fully; keep holding it briefly at the bottom, then release.
- Now press and hold the switch in the ‘up’ direction and let the window close fully.
- With the window shut, keep holding the switch up for about 2 seconds, then release.
- Test the one-touch: a single tap up and a single tap down should now run the window automatically.
Repeat for each window
Each window is learned separately. Repeat the whole sequence at the passenger door (and rear doors if fitted with one-touch) until every window runs automatically again.
If it still won’t learn
Make sure you hold the switch for the full couple of seconds at the top — releasing too early is the usual reason it fails. If a single window still refuses after several tries, check its fuse and that the regulator moves smoothly by hand; a sticking channel can stop the module completing the learn.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Mazda 2 windows lose one-touch after a battery change?
Disconnecting the battery wipes the stored window limits. The switches still work manually, but you have to re-initialise to get automatic up/down back.
Do I need to do all four windows?
Only the ones with a one-touch function — on most DE Mazda 2s that is at least the driver’s. Do each affected window with the same hold-open, hold-closed routine.
My anti-trap keeps reversing the window — is that related?
Yes. Until the window is re-initialised the anti-pinch reference is lost, so it can auto-reverse. Completing the learn restores normal closing.
