Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mazda CX-5 Mk1 (KE, 2012–2017) is straightforward for a battery change or before electrical work, but if your car has the i-stop (idle stop) system there is one important extra step first: the battery-management system must be put to “sleep” before you pull the leads, or the i-stop charge calculation gets confused. This guide covers the safe order of work and what to re-initialise once power is back.

Where the Battery Is

The battery sits in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. Fit a like-for-like battery if you are renewing it — i-stop cars use an enhanced (EFB/AGM-type) battery, so match the original specification.

Before You Disconnect — Note Your Radio Code

• Check whether your audio system needs a security code before you remove power — have it ready if so.
• Note your preset stations and personal settings.
• Turn the ignition off and keep the keyless fob away from the car.
• If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 1 minute after disconnecting before handling those parts; on i-stop cars wait 5 minutes.

i-stop Sleep Routine (Do This First)

Mazda’s battery-management system needs to register that the battery is about to be disconnected. The method depends on whether your CX-5 has the multi-information display (MID).

Cars WITHOUT a multi-information display

1. Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine.
2. Select neutral.
3. Press and hold the brake pedal for at least 5 seconds.
4. Keeping the brake held, press and hold the accelerator pedal — the battery-charge and master warning lights start flashing.
5. Press and release the accelerator 3 times. The battery-charge light comes on steady and the master warning light goes out.
6. Release the brake and turn the ignition off.

Cars WITH a multi-information display

1. Turn the ignition off and close all the doors.
2. A warning message shows and the instrument-cluster display flashes.
3. Wait for the display to stop flashing before you touch the terminals.

Disconnecting — Correct Order

1. Complete the sleep routine above.
2. On i-stop cars, you may also disconnect the battery-sensor connector, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it (this is on the negative lead).
3. Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
4. Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
5. If removing the battery, undo the hold-down clamp and lift it out upright.

Reconnecting — Correct Order

1. Refit the battery and secure the hold-down clamp.
2. Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
3. Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.

What to Reset Afterwards

• Reset the date and time and re-enter your radio code, presets and settings.

If a Warning Light Stays On

Why does my CX-5 need the brake/accelerator routine before disconnecting?

i-stop cars have a battery-management system that tracks charge state. The pedal sequence (or the display-flash wait on MID cars) tells it the battery is coming off, so it doesn’t mis-calculate afterwards and disable i-stop.

Why won’t i-stop work after I reconnected the battery?

It is suppressed until the engine reaches temperature and the battery is sufficiently charged. Drive normally and it returns — usually within a trip or two.

Do I need to register a new battery on a CX-5 Mk1?
