Check the Engine Oil Level

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mercedes E-Class Mk5 (W213) 2016-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Mercedes E-Class W213 has no oil dipstick; you read the level electronically from the instrument cluster. The engine must be warm and the car on level ground.

The menu shows whether to add or drain, in liters, so you are not guessing.

How to check E-Class oil without a dipstick

  1. Park on a level surface with the hood, doors and trunk closed.
  2. Open the cluster engineering menu (ignition to position 1, Trip → Total distance, hold the back button and press OK) — see opening the W213 service menu for the full walkthrough.
  3. Start the engine and select Vehicle data, then Oil level, then Oil filling capacity up to maximum oil level.
  4. Run the engine about two minutes until oil temperature is above 60 °C, then read the level.
  5. The correct band is roughly -0.1 to +0.2 L. Add or drain the amount shown, then re-check.

A valid reading needs the car level, the engine warm and running, and a minute or two for the sensor to settle. Only top up with a Mercedes-approved oil for your engine, because overfilling is as harmful as running low.

Why doesn’t my E-Class have a dipstick?

Mercedes replaced the dipstick with an electronic oil-level sensor. You read the level from the cluster menu with the engine warm, and it tells you how much to add or drain.

If an oil-pressure or level warning lamp appears, stop and investigate before driving — you can check what the code means free on autodtcs.com.
