The small security indicator that blinks on the dash of a parked Nissan Altima (L32, 2007–2012) belongs to the NVIS (NATS) engine immobiliser. On this Intelligent Key–equipped Altima the flashing is normal — but the way it behaves tells you when a real fault has appeared.
Why It Blinks While Parked
With the car locked and switched off, the security indicator flashes continuously. That is the immobiliser advertising itself: the Altima will only start when it recognises a registered Intelligent Key, and the blink deters anyone thinking of taking the car. Its current draw is tiny and normal for a parked vehicle.
What the Immobiliser Verifies
When you press the ignition switch, the system reads the electronic ID built into your Intelligent Key. The body control module and engine ECM must both recognise that ID before the engine is allowed to run. Because it is the electronic ID that matters, a copied key without the correct chip will not start the car.
When the Light Signals a Fault
- Steady with the ignition ON: the immobiliser has detected a fault — have it and its wiring checked.
- Will not start and a key warning shows: the key is not being read — check the Intelligent Key battery and try the spare.
- A newly obtained key will not start it: its ID has not been registered to this Altima.
What Stops the Key Being Read
A flat Intelligent Key battery is the most common cause — but the L32 has a fallback: insert the Intelligent Key into the key port and it can still verify the ID and start. Interference from another key or a transponder on the same ring, or a damaged key, can also block a clean read. A genuine, correctly matched ECM is required too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the blinking draining my battery? No — the draw is negligible. A battery that goes flat in days has a bigger drain elsewhere.
Can I switch the flashing off? No. It is a designed deterrent with no owner off-switch.
What is the difference between this and the green key light? The red security indicator is the immobiliser; a separate Intelligent Key battery-discharge indicator warns that the key’s own coin cell is low.
Can I register a new key myself? No. Adding an Intelligent Key ID to the L32 needs dealer-grade equipment; there is no owner programming routine on this generation.
