These instructions apply to the Nissan Altima Mk4 (L32) 2007-2012.

After a battery disconnect, a throttle-body clean or a throttle repair, the Nissan Altima (L32, 2007–2012) can idle roughly or hunt until the ECM relearns its settings. Whether your car has the QR25DE four-cylinder or the VQ35DE V6, you can complete the full relearn yourself with no scan tool.
Conditions That Must Hold
The learn only succeeds if these stay true throughout; if one slips even briefly it cancels:
- Battery healthy and voltage up.
- Coolant at normal operating temperature.
- CVT in P or N, or a manual in Neutral; steering straight; car stopped.
- Air conditioning and all electrical loads off.
The Relearn Sequence
It runs as the accelerator-pedal and throttle learns, then the idle-air-volume learn. Time the steps with a clock.
- Perform the accelerator-pedal released position learn and the throttle-valve closed position learn first (each is done by cycling the ignition; the throttle valve is heard to move on the closed-position learn).
- Start the engine and warm it to normal operating temperature.
- Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
- With the pedal fully released, turn the ignition ON and wait 3 seconds.
- Within 5 seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
- Wait 7 seconds, then fully depress the pedal and hold it for about 20 seconds until the malfunction indicator lamp stops blinking and stays on.
- Release the pedal within 3 seconds of the lamp turning steady.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20 seconds.
- Rev the engine two or three times and confirm the idle sits near 650 rpm (P/N on the CVT, Neutral on a manual).
If It Will Not Complete
The usual cause is a condition that drifted mid-sequence — a load switching on, the engine not fully warm, or a mistimed step. Confirm the throttle valve closes fully, check for an intake air leak, then run the sequence again from the beginning. Persistent hunting after a clean learn points to a vacuum leak or a throttle body that needs a proper clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a scan tool? No — the sequence above is the no-tool method for both the QR25DE and VQ35DE.
When is it needed? After disconnecting or replacing the battery, cleaning the throttle body, or replacing the throttle actuator or ECM.
The MIL blinked during the pedal steps — is that a fault? No — it is meant to blink then hold steady as a cue during the idle-air-volume step.
What idle is correct? About 650 rpm (±50) with the transmission in P/N or Neutral.
