When the Intelligent Key on your Nissan Altima (L32, 2007–2012) only works up close, or a key battery-discharge indicator lights on the dash, the coin cell inside is running down. Replacing it takes a couple of minutes and one inexpensive battery.
The Battery You Need
The L32 Altima Intelligent Key takes a single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell (or equivalent). A dashboard Intelligent Key battery-discharge indicator is your warning to change it before it dies completely.
Replacing the Cell
- Slide out the mechanical key from the fob — the release helps you split the case.
- Ease the two halves apart at the seam with a small flat screwdriver wrapped in tape.
- Lift out the old cell, noting which face points up.
- Fit the new CR2032 the same way round, keeping fingers, dust and oil off the cell and contacts.
- Click the case back together and slide the mechanical key home.
- Press a button, or start the car, to confirm the key is recognised again.
If It Still Will Not Work
Check the cell is the right way up, seated firmly, and the contacts are clean. If a fresh battery still does nothing wirelessly, you are not stuck: insert the Intelligent Key into the dashboard key port and start the car with the brake pressed while you sort the key out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which battery does the L32 Altima key use? A CR2032 lithium coin cell, or an equivalent brand.
Do I have to reprogram the key afterwards? No — swapping the cell does not erase the programming.
What is the key battery-discharge indicator? A dashboard light that comes on when the Intelligent Key’s coin cell is running low — fit a new CR2032 promptly.
Can I still drive with a completely dead key? Yes — insert the key into the Intelligent Key port and press the ignition switch with the brake down; see our dead-key start guide.
