The Peugeot 2008 Mk2 (P24, 2019–present) has a Stop & Start system that switches the engine off when you come to a standstill — at lights or in a queue — and fires it back up when you lift off the brake or dip the clutch. It saves fuel, and that restart is normal, not a fault. If you’d rather keep the engine running — in traffic, on a hot day, or before working in the engine bay — you can switch it off in seconds.

How Stop & Start Works on the 2008
The system checks several things before it will cut the engine: the 12 V battery must hold enough charge, the engine must be warm, the cabin at your set temperature, and the car safely stopped with the brake held. When all of those are met, the engine stops and the AⓇ symbol appears; ease off the brake or press the clutch and it restarts. If any condition isn’t met, it simply leaves the engine idling rather than risk a flat battery or a cold cabin.
Before You Begin
- You only need the ignition on to change the setting — no need to be moving.
- Check whether your car has the console button or controls it through the i-Cockpit screen (below) — not every trim has the button.
- The change lasts for this journey only; it reverts to on at the next start.
- Opening the bonnet? Switch it off first so the engine can’t restart while your hands are near the belt or fan.
How to Turn Off Stop & Start
- Dashboard button: press the ‘AⓇ’ (Stop & Start OFF) button — often on the centre console or near the gear selector. A message confirms it’s off.
- i-Cockpit touchscreen: on cars without the button, open the Driving / Vehicle menu and switch Stop & Start off.
It Resets Every Drive
Like nearly every car with this feature, the 2008 re-enables Stop & Start each time you restart. There’s no permanent factory ‘off’ — switch it off again at the start of each journey if you prefer.
If the Engine Won’t Stop (Even With the System On)
If Stop & Start is on but the engine never cuts at a standstill, an inhibit condition is almost certainly being met. Check these before assuming a fault:
- A tired or low 12 V battery — by far the most common reason; the system needs healthy charge to guarantee a restart. A battery a few years old, or lots of short trips, triggers it.
- The cabin isn’t at temperature — on a very hot or cold day the climate control keeps the engine running.
- The engine is still cold — it won’t stop until it reaches operating temperature.
- The car isn’t fully stopped or the brake isn’t firm — a gentle roll, or easing the pedal, cancels the stop.
- Steep gradient or sharp steering angle — it may stay running for control on a hill or mid-manoeuvre.
- The bonnet is open — the system disables itself as a safety measure.
After the Reset
Once you press the button, the AⓇ light shows the system is off and the engine idles normally at every stop for the rest of the drive. Next time you start the car it defaults back to on. Nothing needs resetting and no warning stays lit — the indicator just reflects the current setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off Stop & Start on a Peugeot 2008?
Press the AⓇ button on the centre console or by the gear selector. On trims without that button, open the Driving (or Vehicle) menu on the i-Cockpit touchscreen and switch Stop & Start off. A brief dash message confirms the change.
Can I disable it permanently?
No — the 2008 has no built-in permanent off. The setting resets to on every time you restart the engine, so you switch it off again at the start of each journey. That default is deliberate, so the fuel-saving feature is always available.
Why did Stop & Start come back on?
Restarting the car re-enables it automatically. Turning the ignition off and back on always returns the setting to on, regardless of how you left it. That’s normal behaviour, not a fault with the switch or the software.
Why won’t the engine stop sometimes?
The system deliberately keeps the engine running when the 12 V battery charge is low, the cabin still needs heating or cooling, the engine is cold, or you’re on a slope. Once those conditions clear, you’ll usually find it starts cutting the engine again at stops.
Is a weak battery why it stopped working?
Very often, yes. Stop & Start relies on a strong 12 V battery to guarantee an instant restart, so an ageing or under-charged battery is the most common reason the engine no longer cuts out. Frequent short trips that never fully recharge it do the same.
Is it bad for the engine to leave it on?
No — the 2008 is engineered for it, with an uprated starter and battery built for frequent cycling. Leaving it on saves fuel in town. Switching it off is down to preference, or safety before you open the bonnet and work near the engine.
If a Stop & Start fault light shows instead of the normal indicator, look it up on autodtcs.com — a tired 12 V battery is the usual cause. See our 2008 battery guide.
