Turn Off Stop & Start

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 11, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Peugeot Partner Mk2 (B9) 2008-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Short answer: to switch Stop & Start off on the Peugeot Partner B9 (2008–2018), press the “ECO OFF” button — the light in the button comes on and a message shows. Press it again (or restart the van) to switch it back on. If Stop & Start simply won’t stop the engine, that is usually normal and down to the conditions below.

Turn Stop & Start Off (and Back On)

  1. Press the “ECO OFF” switch. The tell-tale in the switch lights up and a message appears — Stop & Start is now disabled.
  2. If the engine was already in STOP when you pressed it, it restarts immediately.
  3. To re-enable, press “ECO OFF” again (the switch light goes out), or simply switch the ignition off and on — the system re-enables itself at the next start.

Why Stop & Start Won’t Stop the Engine

Most “Stop & Start not working” cases are the system deciding conditions aren’t right — not a fault. The ECO light flashes for a few seconds and goes out. The engine will not enter STOP when:

  • the van is on a steep slope (uphill or downhill);
  • the driver’s door is open or the driver’s seatbelt is unbuckled;
  • you haven’t yet driven above 10 km/h since the last start;
  • the windscreen demist/defrost is on, or the climate control still needs to run;
  • conditions such as battery charge, engine temperature, brake servo or outside temperature don’t allow it.

To enter STOP normally: on a manual gearbox, come below 20 km/h, select neutral and release the clutch; on the automated 6-speed, below 8 km/h with the brake pressed or the lever in N. The engine restarts when you press the clutch (manual) or release the brake / select a gear (automated).

The Special Battery Behind Stop & Start

Stop & Start relies on a special 12V battery. Two things follow from that:

  • After the battery has been disconnected or replaced, Stop & Start can stay inactive for several hours (up to about 8) while it re-learns the battery’s charge state — see our battery disconnect guide.
  • Fitting a wrong (non-specified) battery commonly makes Stop & Start stop working — it needs the Peugeot-specified type.

When It Is Actually a Fault

If the tell-tale in the ECO OFF button flashes and then stays on permanently, that is a system fault — have it checked by a Peugeot dealer or qualified workshop. If the engine won’t restart from STOP and all the dashboard lights come on, switch the ignition off and restart with the key.

Safety

Always switch Stop & Start off before working under the bonnet (the engine can auto-restart), and when driving through flood water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off Stop & Start on a Peugeot Partner?

Press the ECO OFF button — the light in it comes on and Stop & Start is disabled. Press it again, or restart the van, to turn it back on.

Why isn’t my Partner’s Stop & Start working?

Usually the conditions aren’t met: a slope, door open, seatbelt off, demist on, not yet driven above 10 km/h, or battery/temperature limits. The ECO light flashes briefly and goes out — that’s normal, not a fault.

Stop & Start stopped working after I changed the battery — why?

It can take up to about 8 hours to re-learn a newly fitted battery, and it needs the correct special battery type. A wrong battery is a common cause of Stop & Start no longer engaging.

Does turning Stop & Start off stay off?

No — it re-enables every time you switch the ignition on. Press ECO OFF each drive if you want it off.

The ECO OFF light is flashing and staying on — what does that mean?

That indicates a Stop & Start system fault. Have it checked by a Peugeot dealer or qualified workshop.

If a warning light or fault code appeared with it, look it up on our sister site autodtcs.com to see whether it points to a fault.
