Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Subaru XV Mk1 (GP) 2012-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 12-volt battery on the first-generation Subaru XV (GP, 2012–2017) sits in the engine compartment. Disconnecting it is straightforward, but the boxer-engined XV relearns several settings afterwards, so note your audio security code first and be ready to re-initialise the windows and sunroof.

How to disconnect and reconnect the XV battery

  1. Note the radio/navigation security code and your preset stations, and have them to hand for later.
  2. Switch off the ignition and all electrical loads, and close the doors and tailgate.
  3. Open the bonnet and locate the battery in the engine compartment.
  4. Slacken and remove the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+) terminal. Tuck the leads aside so they cannot spring back onto the posts.
  5. Carry out your work. When refitting, connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−), and tighten both clamps securely.
  6. Switch the ignition on and re-enter the audio code, then reset the clock and preset stations.
  7. Re-initialise the power windows so the one-touch/auto function works again, and re-initialise the electric sunroof if one is fitted.
  8. Drive the car so the indirect tyre-pressure monitor relearns its reference.

Always remove the negative lead first and reconnect it last — it keeps the spanner from shorting a live terminal to the bodywork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Subaru XV (GP)?

In the engine compartment, accessed by opening the bonnet. The GP does not carry its 12-volt battery in the boot.

What do I lose when I disconnect the battery?

The clock, radio presets and any stored audio code, plus the learned settings for the power windows, the sunroof and the indirect tyre-pressure monitor. All of these are restored with the quick re-initialisation steps above.

Do I need to reset anything after reconnecting?

Yes — re-enter the audio code, reset the windows and sunroof, and drive the car to relearn the tyre-pressure reference. The engine will also smooth out its idle again over the first few minutes of running.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, read the stored code on autodtcs.com before clearing it.
