Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

The Toyota Yaris Cross (XP21, 2021–present) is sold as a hybrid, so it has two separate electrical systems. This guide covers the 12 V battery — the part you can safely work on — for fitting a fresh battery, before electrical repairs, to prevent a slow drain during long storage, or to recover the car after the 12 V side has gone flat. The high-voltage hybrid battery is never an owner job. Keep to the right order — negative off first, positive on first — and the car wakes up cleanly and relearns the handful of settings it drops.

Two Batteries — Know the Difference

  • The 12 V battery runs the lights, locks and computers, and wakes the car up. It’s in the engine bay — this is the one you disconnect.
  • The high-voltage hybrid battery drives the car. Never touch the orange cables or HV components — that’s strictly dealer/technician territory.

Where the 12 V Battery Is

The 12 V battery is in the engine bay. Lift the bonnet, prop it, and look for the terminals under a cover or flap. The negative (−) post carries the black earth lead and a minus marking; the positive (+) post sits under a red cap. Everything in this job stays on the ordinary 12 V side — keep clear of any orange high-voltage cabling throughout.

Before You Start

  • Make sure the car is fully off (not READY) — check the dash is dark before you touch anything.
  • Turn everything off — lights, climate, wipers, display — and take the smart key well away from the car.
  • Note the radio presets you’ll want back and any seat/mirror positions.
  • Wait a minute or two after switching off for the modules to power down before touching a terminal.
  • Have the right spanner ready (typically a 10 mm), and wear gloves and eye protection.

Disconnecting the 12 V Battery

  1. Make sure the car is fully off (not READY), all electrical consumers off, and the smart key is away.
  2. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, slacken the clamp, lift the lead off and tuck it clear so it can’t spring back onto the post.
  3. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then release the hold-down clamp and lift the battery out keeping it upright.

Stay away from the orange high-voltage cabling throughout.

Reconnecting

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first and nip up its clamp, then fit the negative (−) last and tighten it. Refit the cover.
  2. Reset the clock; the display and radio reload on their own.
  3. Press the power button to READY and check no new warnings remain.

The first few stops may feel slightly different while the hybrid system relearns — that’s normal. A like-for-like 12 V battery needs no coding or registration.

What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards

Cutting the 12 V power clears learned settings, not anything permanent. Expect to reset the clock and your radio presets. The one-touch/anti-pinch windows may drop out and need a quick re-teach before they auto-close again. On a hybrid the engine and hybrid control relearns its idle and drive behaviour over the first few miles, so the first stops and starts can feel slightly different until it settles. A stray tyre-pressure or driver-assist warning can appear briefly and then self-clear after a short drive.

If a Warning Light Stays On

  • Check both clamps are properly tight — a loose earth is the usual cause of odd behaviour afterwards.
  • Take a short drive so the hybrid system can relearn and any transient warnings clear.
  • Re-run the window re-initialise if one-touch or anti-pinch still isn’t working.
  • If a light persists, rule out a genuinely tired or flat 12 V battery, and read any stored fault code to see what the car is reporting.
