Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Toyota Yaris Cross Mk1 (XP21) 2021-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

The Toyota Yaris Cross (XP21, 2021–present) is sold as a hybrid, so it has two separate electrical systems. This guide covers the 12 V battery — the part you can safely work on. The high-voltage hybrid battery is never an owner job.

Two Batteries — Know the Difference

  • The 12 V battery runs the lights, locks and computers, and wakes the car up. It’s in the engine bay — this is the one you disconnect.
  • The high-voltage hybrid battery drives the car. Never touch the orange cables or HV components — that’s strictly dealer/technician territory.

Disconnecting the 12 V Battery

  1. Make sure the car is fully off (not READY), all electrical consumers off, and the smart key is away.
  2. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead clear.
  3. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp.

Stay away from the orange high-voltage cabling throughout.

Reconnecting

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last.
  2. Reset the clock; the display and radio reload on their own.
  3. Press the power button to READY and check no new warnings remain.

The first few stops may feel slightly different while the hybrid system relearns — that’s normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the 12V battery on a Toyota Yaris Cross?

In the engine bay. Disconnect the negative terminal first.

Is it safe to disconnect the battery on a hybrid?

Yes — the 12 V battery is just like any car’s. Only the orange high-voltage system is off-limits.

Does the battery need coding?

No registration is required for a like-for-like 12 V battery.

Can I jump-start the Yaris Cross?

You can receive a jump to the 12 V battery to wake the car, then it starts the hybrid system itself — never jump from the high-voltage side.

For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the maintenance reminder, see our Yaris Cross service reset.
