There’s no dipstick under the bonnet of your Volvo XC40 (536, 2017–present) — you check the engine oil electronically through the driver display. Here’s how to get an accurate reading.
Why No Dipstick
Volvo uses an electronic oil-level sensor instead of a dipstick. The car can’t see oil you’ve just added or drained until it has settled and the engine has run, so the reading depends on doing it in the right order.
Getting an Accurate Reading
- Drive about 30 km so the oil is warm and circulated.
- Park on a level surface, switch the ignition off and wait 5 minutes.
- Without pressing any pedal, press the start/stop button for ~2 seconds to switch the ignition on.
- Scroll the driver-display menu to ‘Vehicle status’ → ‘Status’ → ‘Oil level’.
- Read the level and top up if needed.
Topping Up
Add the correct Volvo-approved oil a little at a time, re-checking between additions — don’t exceed the maximum. After an oil change the system needs a drive cycle before it shows the new level accurately.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check the oil on a Volvo XC40 with no dipstick?
Drive ~30 km, park level, ignition off 5 minutes, then ignition on and read Vehicle status → Status → Oil level in the driver display.
Why does the reading seem wrong after topping up?
The sensor needs the engine warm and a drive cycle to show the new level; re-check after driving.
What oil does it take?
A Volvo-approved grade — check the filler cap / handbook for the exact specification.
Engine running or off?
Ignition on, engine off, after the wait — follow the on-screen prompt.
