The Kia Rio (2011–2018) with automatic transmission is equipped with an emergency park release. This feature allows you to move the gear lever out of P (Park) if the battery is flat or there is a shift lock fault. It’s a safety feature designed for towing or moving the vehicle in an emergency.
When to Use
- If the battery is discharged and the gear lever is stuck in Park.
- If the brake switch or shift lock system malfunctions.
- When the car needs to be moved or towed but cannot be started.
Location of the Release
- The shift lock release slot is located next to the gear selector on the centre console.
- It is usually covered with a small plastic cap labeled “Shift Lock”.

Emergency Park Release Procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly to prevent rolling.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Remove the small plastic cap beside the gear lever to expose the shift lock slot.
- Insert a flat screwdriver or the mechanical key into the slot.
- While pressing down in the slot, press the gear lever button and shift to N (Neutral).
- The car can now be moved or towed slowly.
Important Notes
- This function is for emergency use only — have the fault checked by a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
- Do not tow the car with drive wheels on the ground for long distances; use a flatbed where possible.
- If the steering remains locked, turn the key in the ignition to ON to unlock it.
