Start the Engine With a Dead Key Fob

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Altima Mk4 (L32) 2007-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the Intelligent Key battery in your Nissan Altima (L32, 2007–2012) dies, the car may not recognise the key and the push-button start will not respond. This generation has a built-in backup: an Intelligent Key port that lets you start the engine even with a completely flat key battery.

The Warning You Will See

When the key battery is low, an Intelligent Key battery-discharge indicator lights on the dash. If the system can no longer read the key wirelessly, an Intelligent Key insertion indicator appears — that is your cue to use the key port.

How to Start With a Dead Key Battery

  1. Carry the Intelligent Key with you and sit in the driver’s seat.
  2. Locate the Intelligent Key port (the slot provided for the key) on the dash.
  3. Insert the Intelligent Key into the port the correct way round — this lets the immobiliser verify the key’s ID directly.
  4. Press the brake pedal firmly (or, on a manual car, depress the clutch and brake).
  5. Press the push-button ignition switch to start the engine.
  6. Once running, leave the key in the port or keep it with you as normal, and replace the key battery as soon as you can.

After You Get Going

Starting this way is only a workaround for a flat key battery — fit a fresh coin cell (a CR2032) at the first opportunity so the car reads the key wirelessly again. If a fully charged key battery still will not start the car from the port, the key may need re-syncing or the immobiliser may have a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Intelligent Key port? It is a dedicated slot on the dash for inserting the key; the owner literature calls it the Intelligent Key port. Insert the key in the correct direction until it seats.

Do I press the button or does inserting start it? Inserting the key only lets the system read it — you still press the push-button ignition switch with the brake depressed to start.

Is the 12-volt car battery the problem instead? If nothing at all responds — no lights, no dash — suspect the car’s 12-volt battery, which is a different fault from a flat key.

Which battery does the key take? A CR2032 coin cell — see our key-fob battery guide for the swap.
