Disconnect the 12V Battery Safely

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 11, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Peugeot Partner Mk2 (B9) 2008-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Short answer: to disconnect the 12V battery on the Peugeot Partner B9 (2008–2018) safely, switch the ignition off and wait two minutes before you undo the terminals. On reconnection, switch the ignition on and wait one minute before starting so the electronics re-initialise.

Before You Disconnect

The battery is under the bonnet. Never undo the terminals with the engine running. If you have just reset the service indicator, lock the van and wait at least five minutes first so that reset is stored — otherwise it is lost. Note that after any disconnection the remote may need re-synchronising and some comfort settings can reset.

Disconnect the Battery

  1. Switch the ignition off and remove the key. Close the doors.
  2. Wait two minutes before touching the terminals, so the systems power down.
  3. Undo the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive if you need to remove the battery.

Reconnect the Battery

  1. Reconnect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−), and make sure both clamps are clean and tight.
  2. Switch the ignition on and wait one minute before starting the engine, so the electronic systems can re-initialise.
  3. Re-synchronise the remote if it no longer locks the van, and reset the clock and any other settings that cleared.

If problems remain after this, have the vehicle checked by a qualified workshop.

Resetting the Clock, Trip and Windows After Reconnection

  • Clock and date: reset the time and date from the dashboard — use the time-set knob or the display menu to set the hour, minutes and date.
  • Trip computer: press and hold the button on the end of the wiper stalk for more than two seconds to zero the trip readings.
  • Electric windows: the one-touch function usually stops after a disconnection and needs re-initialising — see how to reinitialise the electric windows.

Diesel and Stop & Start Notes

  • Some vans carry a sticker showing a special 12V battery that should only be disconnected or replaced by a Peugeot dealer or a qualified workshop — check for it before working.
  • After refitting a Stop & Start battery, the system can take several hours (up to about 8) before it works again, depending on charge and weather.
  • To charge the battery with a charger, disconnect the terminals first (negative last off, and reconnect starting with the negative per the charger’s instructions). The Stop & Start battery can be charged in place without removing the leads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which battery terminal do I disconnect first on the Partner?

The negative (−) first. On reconnection, do the positive (+) first and the negative last.

How long should I wait before disconnecting the battery?

Switch the ignition off and wait two minutes before undoing the terminals, so the electronic systems power down.

What do I do after reconnecting the battery?

Switch the ignition on and wait one minute before starting so the electronics re-initialise, then re-sync the remote and reset the clock if needed.

Why won’t Stop & Start work after I changed the battery?

It can take several hours (up to around 8) for the system to become available again after a battery is fitted, depending on the battery’s charge state and the weather. If it never returns, have it checked.

If a warning light stayed on after reconnecting, look it up on our sister site autodtcs.com to see whether it points to a fault.
