Enable or Disable the Start/Stop (ISG) System

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 22, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i10 Mk2 (IA) 2014-2019.

The Hyundai i10 (IA, 2014–2019) with a manual gearbox can be fitted with Idle Stop & Go (ISG), which shuts the engine off when you come to a standstill to save fuel. If you would rather keep it running, one button switches it off.

How to Turn Off Idle Stop & Go

Auto Stop OFF (ISG) button on a Hyundai i10 centre console
The Auto Stop (A OFF) button on the centre console – press it once to switch stop/start off. Left-hand-drive car shown.
  1. Find the ISG OFF button on the dashboard, near the steering wheel switch bank.
  2. Press it once — the light in the ISG OFF button comes on, and the engine will keep running at a standstill.
  3. To switch ISG back on, press ISG OFF again — the button light goes out.

It Comes Back On Every Drive

ISG is armed whenever the engine is running, so it re-enables itself each time you restart the car. There is no permanent ‘off’ — press ISG OFF once per journey if you don’t want it.

How the Auto Stop Works on This i10

Because the ISG i10 is a manual, the engine only auto-stops when you slow below 5 km/h (3 mph), shift to Neutral and release the clutch — the green AUTO STOP indicator then lights on the cluster. Press the clutch again and the engine restarts.

When ISG Will Not Stop the Engine

Even with ISG on, the engine keeps running unless every condition is met — the driver’s seatbelt is fastened, the driver’s door and bonnet are closed, brake vacuum and battery charge are adequate, the coolant is warm enough, and the outside temperature is between −2 °C and 35 °C (28–95 °F). Undo your seatbelt or open the door/bonnet during an auto-stop and the engine restarts and ISG switches off (its button light comes on).

Why Switch It Off?

  • Before engine-bay work — prevents an unexpected auto-restart.
  • Stop-go traffic — avoids constant restarts.
  • Maximum cabin cooling or heating on extreme days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off auto stop/start on a Hyundai i10?

Press the ISG OFF button on the dash; the light in the button confirms it is off. It only applies to manual cars fitted with ISG.

Can I disable it permanently?

No — it re-arms at every ignition cycle. Press ISG OFF once each drive.

Why did the ISG OFF light come on by itself?

The system disables when a condition isn’t met — a cold engine, a weak 12 V battery, or an out-of-range cabin temperature will do it. A light that stays on constantly is worth having checked.

Why doesn’t my engine ever auto-stop?

Most often the 12 V battery charge is low, the engine is still cold, or the climate system is working hard — all of which hold the engine running by design.

If an ISG or engine warning light shows instead of the normal indicator, look the code up on autodtcs.com — a tired 12 V battery is the usual cause. See our i10 battery guide.
