Release the Gear Selector from Park (Shift-Lock Override)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Corsa Mk5 (E/X15) 2014-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On an automatic Vauxhall Corsa E (2014–2019, 6-speed 6T30), the gear selector locks in P until the car has power and your foot is on the brake. If the 12 V battery is flat or the brake-light circuit has failed, you can release it by hand to move or recover the car.

How to release the Corsa E gear selector from Park

  1. Apply the parking brake and chock a wheel if you are on any slope.
  2. Carefully prise off the trim cover around the base of the gear lever.
  3. Push the exposed release lever downward and hold it.
  4. Move the gear selector from P to N.
  5. Refit the gear lever cover.

This is an emergency override only. With the selector in N the car can roll freely, so keep the parking brake on until you are ready to move it. If the lever will not release normally once power is restored, have the shift-lock and brake-light circuit checked.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Corsa E stuck in Park?
The shift-lock needs battery power and a brake-pedal signal to free the lever. A flat battery or a blown brake-light fuse is the usual cause.

Is the manual Corsa E affected?
No. This only applies to the automatic (6T30) selector; a manual gearbox has no shift-lock.

If a blown fuse is behind it, a failed brake-light circuit often sets a fault code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
