Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mercedes E-Class Mk5 (W213) 2016-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On the Mercedes E-Class W213 you disconnect the 12V battery by removing the negative (earth) clamp with everything switched off, then waiting at least ten seconds. Mild-hybrid (EQ Boost) models must have their 48V system shut down first.

Disconnecting is owner-friendly, but fitting a new battery also needs registering to the power-management system with a diagnostic tool.

How to disconnect the E-Class battery

  1. Turn the ignition off and take the keyless remote outside transmitter range of the car.
  2. Make sure all electrical consumers (lights, climate, radio) are off.
  3. Locate the 12V battery and its terminals. On the W213 the battery sits in the engine compartment, usually under a cover on one side.
  4. Disconnect the negative/earth clamp first.
  5. Wait at least ten seconds before working on the car.
  6. To reconnect, refit the negative clamp, then reset the date and time.
  7. Re-initialize the door mirror position by cycling the mirror-adjust switch through its travel.

Mild-hybrid (EQ Boost) models: these carry a separate 48V battery. Do not disconnect the 12V battery until the 48V system has been shut down by the procedure in the owner’s supplement. If you do not have that procedure, leave it to a workshop — getting it wrong can damage the electronics.

The W213 provides dedicated jump-start points under the hood, so for a boost you never need to reach the battery itself. Most models also carry a small auxiliary/backup battery in addition to the main one.

If you have fitted a brand-new battery, have it registered to the power management so the charging strategy matches the new cell — skipping that shortens battery life.

Does the Mercedes E-Class have two batteries?

Usually yes. There is the main 12V starter battery plus a smaller auxiliary/backup battery, and mild-hybrid models add a separate 48V battery for the EQ Boost system.

Do I need to code a new E-Class battery?

Disconnecting and reconnecting the existing battery needs no coding. Fitting a new battery should be registered to the power management with a diagnostic tool so charging is correct.

After reconnecting, your radio, clock and mirror settings may need resetting. If a warning lamp stays on afterwards, look the code up free on autodtcs.com.
