The Mercedes E-Class W213 has a pad-replacement (service) mode for its electronic parking brake, reached through the cluster engineering menu. It retracts the rear calipers so the pads can be changed without a diagnostic tool.
Entering and leaving service mode is straightforward; the pad change itself is a skilled job that needs the correct tools and torque values. If you are not confident, have the pads done by a workshop.
How to enter E-Class parking brake service mode
- Close the hood, all doors and the trunk, and chock the front wheels.
- Open the cluster engineering menu (ignition on, Trip → Total distance, hold the back button and press OK) — see opening the W213 service menu for the full walkthrough.
- Select PAD REPLACEMENT MODE and activate the service mode; confirm with OK. Do not press the brake pedal while the mode is active.
- Turn the ignition off and keep all keyless remotes out of range.
- Change the rear pads. When the job is done, turn the ignition on, deactivate the service mode and confirm, then back out of the menu.
- Pump the brake pedal until it is firm, apply and release the parking brake once, and check it holds before driving.
The electric parking brake re-tensions automatically once service mode is deactivated, so the pedal and handbrake must feel normal again before you move the car.
For the pad change itself: work on the car securely supported, fit the correct rear pad set, and torque the caliper hardware to the manufacturer’s figures. Retract the piston gently and straight — do not lever against the disc or force the actuator. This is a safety-critical brake job; if any step is unclear, stop and use a workshop.
Do I need a scanner to change E-Class rear brake pads?
No. The W213 cluster menu has a pad-replacement mode that retracts the electric parking brake, so a diagnostic tool is not required. The mechanical pad change still needs the right tools and torque values.
If the parking-brake warning lamp stays on after the job, a stored code will say why — you can read it free on autodtcs.com.
