These instructions apply to the Skoda Octavia Mk3 (5E) 2013-2020.

If your DSG Škoda Octavia Mk3 (5E, 2013–2020) is stuck in Park and the selector will not move — usually a flat 12 V battery, a blown fuse or a shift-interlock fault — you can release it mechanically to roll or load the car. This applies to automatic/DSG cars only and is a recovery step, not a repair.

Before you start
On a DSG Octavia the selector stays locked in P until the car has power, the brake is pressed and the electronics release the shift-lock; if that cannot happen, the parking pawl keeps the car immobile and this manual release lets you select neutral.
- Apply the parking brake or block the wheels first — the car can roll once it is in neutral.
- Work on level ground, or with the car already secured on a recovery vehicle.
How to Release the Octavia DSG from Park
- Press and hold the brake pedal (or pull the handbrake lever).
- Remove the gear-lever cover — the trim around the base of the selector unclips to expose the release mechanism.
- Move the slider as marked, then press and hold the button it reveals.
- With the button held, move the gear lever out of position P (into N).
- Refit the cover. The car can now be rolled or winched — keep it braked or chocked until it is secured.
After the Emergency Release
This only frees the car — it does not fix the cause. The most common reason is a flat or failing 12 V battery; once power is restored the selector works normally. If the battery was the cause, see our Octavia Mk3 battery disconnect/reconnect guide. If the battery is healthy but the lever still won’t release under power, a shift-interlock or selector fault may be stored — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my automatic Octavia stuck in Park?
Almost always a flat 12 V battery or blown fuse that prevents the shift-lock releasing. A brake-light switch or selector fault can do the same.
Does this apply to a manual Octavia?
No — only DSG automatics have a Park position and this release. A manual is freed simply by selecting neutral.
Will I damage the gearbox?
No — the emergency release is a designed function for this situation. Move the selector gently and refit the cover afterwards.
The lever moves but the car won’t roll — why?
Make sure you reached neutral, the handbrake is off and the wheels are unblocked once you are ready to move.
