Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Citroën Berlingo Mk2 (B9, 2008–2018) needs one extra step over older cars: the Built-in Systems Interface (BSI) must be allowed to “go to sleep” first — about 4 minutes — or you risk stored faults. This guide covers the correct order of work and what to reset afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The battery is in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. Fit a like-for-like battery if you are renewing it.
Before You Disconnect — The 4-Minute Sleep
- Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake and put the gearbox in neutral.
- Check the audio security code is to hand.
- Open the bonnet. Close all the doors and windows and lock the van with the mechanical key.
- Turn the engine off and remove the key.
- Wait 4 minutes for the BSI to power down before touching the terminals.
If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, after disconnecting also wait 5 minutes before handling those parts.
Disconnecting
- After the 4-minute wait, slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
Reconnecting
- Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
- Turn the ignition on and wait a couple of minutes before starting, to let the BSI wake.
What to Reset Afterwards
- Reset the date and time and re-enter your radio code and presets.
- Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch won’t work until re-taught (see our window initialise guide).
- Check the remote control locks and unlocks the van; if not, lock/unlock once with the mechanical key to re-sync.
- The Stop & Start system may stay dormant until the battery is charged — normal for the first drive.
If a Warning Light Stays On
One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If a warning stays on, a fault code was logged — reading it needs an OBD scanner, and you can look up what a Citroën code means on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why wait 4 minutes before disconnecting the Berlingo battery?
The BSI stays awake briefly after you lock up. Waiting ~4 minutes lets it power down cleanly, avoiding stored faults and lost configuration.
Do I need to register a new battery?
No coding is strictly required to disconnect and reconnect; for a new battery, some owners have the BSI battery parameters reset at a garage for the Stop & Start strategy, but the van runs fine without it.
Will I lose my radio?
The unit may ask for its security code after a power loss. Have it ready, or use a memory-saver to avoid it.
