Turn the Stop-Start System On or Off

These instructions apply to the Citroën Berlingo Mk2 (B9) 2008-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Later versions of the Citroën Berlingo Mk2 (B9, 2008–2018) have a Stop & Start system that switches the engine off when you come to a halt and restarts it as you pull away. It saves fuel, but some drivers prefer it off in stop-go traffic or when loading. This guide shows how to switch it off, and why it sometimes won’t engage. If your Berlingo has no “ECO OFF” button, it isn’t fitted with the system.

How Stop & Start Works on the Berlingo

When you brake to a stop (and conditions allow), the system shuts the engine down. Lifting the brake or pressing the clutch restarts it automatically.

How to Switch It Off

  1. With the engine running, find the “ECO OFF” / Stop & Start button on the dashboard (an “A” inside a circular arrow).
  2. Press it once. A dash light or message confirms the system is switched off.
  3. The engine now idles normally at a stop.

How to Switch It Back On

Press the button again, or simply restart the van — Stop & Start defaults back to ON every time you switch the ignition off and on.

Why It Sometimes Won’t Activate

  • The engine is not yet up to temperature.
  • The battery charge is low — common after a battery change or short trips.
  • Cabin heating or demisting needs the engine running.
  • The steering is turned, or the van is on a slope.

If it stopped working entirely after a battery disconnection, the battery needs to recharge — see our Berlingo battery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Berlingo remember my Stop & Start setting?

No — it resets to ON every time you restart the van. Press the OFF button each drive if you prefer it disabled.

My Berlingo has no ECO button — does it have Stop & Start?

Not all versions were fitted with it. If there’s no “A”/ECO OFF button on the dash, your van doesn’t have the system and idles normally at a stop.

Why did it stop working after a flat battery?

It only runs when the battery is well charged. After a jump-start or battery change it stays dormant until charge recovers; a few longer drives usually restore it.

If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Berlingo service indicator reset guide.
