The Toyota RAV4 Mk5 (XA50, 2019–present) is sold mostly as a hybrid, so it has two separate batteries: a high-voltage traction battery (never touch it) and a 12 V auxiliary battery that runs the electronics. This guide covers safely disconnecting the 12 V battery — the one you change or isolate for electrical work.
Important: Which Battery This Is
You only ever work on the 12 V auxiliary battery. Never touch the orange high-voltage cables or the traction battery — that system is for trained technicians. The 12 V job below is owner-safe.
Where the 12V Battery Is
On the RAV4 Mk5 the 12 V auxiliary battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover (front of the bay). Your handbook shows the exact spot for your model.
Disconnecting
- Switch the car fully off (not “ready”) and keep the smart key away from the car.
- Wait 1 minute after switching off before disconnecting.
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- If removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, allow the system to discharge during that wait before going further.
Reconnecting
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten both and refit the cover.
- Reset the clock and check your settings; the car may want a short drive to relearn idle/transmission behaviour.
The RAV4 doesn’t need the new 12 V battery coded.
