If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows stop working on your Vauxhall Astra K (Mk7, 2015–2021) — Opel Astra — usually after a flat or disconnected battery, the window motor has lost its learned end-stops and anti-pinch reference. Re-teaching it takes seconds per door, no tools. This is a normal side-effect of losing 12 V power, not a fault with the switch or motor, and nothing needs replacing.
Why It Happens
The window controller remembers the fully-closed position so one-touch can stop correctly and the anti-trap can work. A power interruption clears that memory, leaving only hold-to-move operation.
How the Window System Works on the Astra K
Each front door has its own control module that stores the exact top and bottom positions of the glass. Those stored limits are what allow the window to run on its own with a single tap and what let the anti-trap function reverse the glass if it senses an obstruction near the top. When the 12 V supply is cut — a flat battery, a disconnection for service, or a blown window fuse — the module still powers the motor but no longer knows the limits, so it will only move the glass while you hold the switch. Before You Start
- Turn the ignition on so the windows have full power throughout the learn.
- Keep the door closed so the glass seats at its true closed stop.
- Check the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak battery can abort the learn part-way.
- Clear the run channel of ice, grit or a lifted seal so the glass reaches the top without dragging.
- Do one window at a time from that door’s own switch.
How to Re-initialise a Window
- Sit in the car with the door closed and the ignition on.
- Pull the switch up to fully close the window and keep holding for about 2–3 seconds after it stops.
- Release, then press the switch down to fully open and hold a moment at the bottom.
- Pull up again to fully close and hold for a couple of seconds at the top.
- Release and test one-touch up and down — it should now run on its own.
Repeat for each affected window using its own switch.
If One-Touch Still Doesn’t Work
- Hold a little longer at the fully-closed stop — the controller needs to register the top limit before you release.
- Make sure the door is shut and the battery is healthy during the learn.
- Check the window fuse if a door is completely dead — the motor needs power for the learn to finish.
- Run the cycle slowly; releasing the instant the glass stops is the usual reason the top limit doesn’t take.
- If the other doors relearned but one still won’t auto, that door’s regulator or switch may be worn.
- After a deeply flat battery, do the driver’s window first, then the rest.
What to Expect After
Once the limit is stored, a single tap runs the window fully up or down on its own and the anti-trap reverse returns near the top. The setting holds until the next power loss, so you should only need to repeat this after another battery disconnect or fuse change — not as routine maintenance.
