Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Mk1 (949) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 7, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017–present) catches a lot of owners out, because on this rear-drive Giorgio-platform car the battery isn’t under the bonnet — it’s in the boot. Here’s where it is and the safe sequence, including the longer wait times the Stelvio needs.

Find the Battery First

The 12 V battery is in the luggage compartment (boot), usually under a side panel or the floor — the under-bonnet terminals are for jump-starting only. (This rear-mounted layout helps the Stelvio’s weight balance.)

  1. Switch the ignition off, note your presets, and make sure all consumers are off.
  2. Open the boot, reach the battery, and disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
  3. Working near airbags or pretensioners? Wait 10 minutes after disconnecting before starting any such work.

Reconnecting and Re-initialising

  1. Reconnect positive first, then negative.
  2. Wait about 5 minutes before switching on, then start the car.
  3. Re-initialise the electric windows, the sunroof (if fitted) and the power tailgate — all lose their calibration.
  4. The steering-angle sensor relearns as you drive; re-enter the clock and settings.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Windows, sunroof or tailgate only move while held — run the relevant re-initialisation.
  • Warning lights after reconnection usually clear after a short drive; a persistent one stores a code (decode on autodtcs.com).
  • A new/different battery — fit the correct AGM-type to the same spec for the stop/start system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on an Alfa Romeo Stelvio?

In the boot (luggage compartment), not under the bonnet — the under-bonnet terminals are only for jump-starting.

Which terminal first?

Negative (−) off first, reconnect it last.

How long should I wait?

Allow 10 minutes after disconnecting before airbag-area work, and about 5 minutes after reconnecting before switching on.

What needs resetting afterwards?

The windows, sunroof and power tailgate re-initialise; steering-angle relearns by driving.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
