Reinitialise the Power Tailgate

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Mk1 (949) 2017-Present.

If the powered tailgate on your Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017–present) has stopped working properly — usually after a battery disconnection or flat battery — it needs a quick re-initialisation so it relearns its open and close positions. It’s done from the remote in seconds, with no workshop visit and no tools, and it’s a normal part of owning a car with a powered boot rather than a sign that anything has broken.

When You Need This

The power tailgate, fitted to higher-spec Stelvios, relies on the boot control module remembering exactly where the ‘fully open’ and ‘fully closed’ positions are. That stored calibration is what lets the tailgate stop at the right height, reverse when it meets an obstruction, and open or close smoothly at the touch of a button. When the 12 V battery is disconnected — for a battery change, bodywork, or any job that pulls power — or when it simply goes flat, the module loses those reference points.

With the calibration gone, the tailgate may refuse to open or close automatically, stop part-way, move in short bursts each time you press the button, or beep and reverse before it reaches the end of its travel. None of that means the motor or struts have failed; the tailgate has just forgotten its limits and needs to be walked through them once so it can relearn them.

How the Re-initialisation Works

Rather than a menu on the touchscreen, the Stelvio re-initialises the tailgate through a simple lock/unlock sequence on the remote control key. Pressing lock and then holding unlock tells the body electronics to re-run the tailgate’s learning routine, re-establishing the open and closed end stops. Because it’s driven entirely from the key, you can do it standing beside the car in your driveway.

Before You Start

  • Park on level ground with room for the tailgate to swing up fully — no low garage roof, shelving, or bike rack in the way.
  • Close every door and the tailgate itself. An open or ajar door will block the routine.
  • Use the master remote you normally lock the car with, and make sure its battery is healthy — a weak key fob gives an unreliable signal.
  • Clear the tailgate opening of luggage, shopping bags, or anything that could obstruct its travel.
  • Stand within a couple of metres of the car so the remote is well within range.

The Procedure

  1. Close all the doors.
  2. Close the boot/tailgate.
  3. Press the LOCK button on the remote control.
  4. Press and hold the UNLOCK button on the remote control.
  5. The power tailgate is initialised.

Once the sequence is complete, test it: operate the tailgate from the button on the tailgate, from the interior switch, and from the remote to confirm it opens and closes fully in one smooth movement.

If It Still Won’t Operate

  • Make sure every door and the tailgate are fully closed before starting — an ajar door blocks the routine, and this is the most common reason it won’t take.
  • Check nothing obstructs the tailgate travel and the remote battery is healthy; swap in a fresh fob battery if the key has felt weak.
  • Repeat the lock-then-hold-unlock sequence once more if the first attempt didn’t restore full automatic movement.
  • Confirm the tailgate isn’t in a manual or valet mode and that the height limit hasn’t been set unusually low in the vehicle settings.
  • Still faulty? A tailgate-module or latch issue can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

What to Expect After

With the calibration relearned, the tailgate should once again open to its set height and close fully at a single press, and its anti-trap protection should behave normally — pausing and reversing if it meets your hand or an obstacle. It’s worth cycling it open and closed two or three times so you’re confident the movement is smooth and the end positions are correct before you load anything heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the power tailgate on an Alfa Stelvio?

Close all the doors and the tailgate, press the LOCK button on the remote control, then press and hold the UNLOCK button. That runs the learning routine and re-establishes the open and closed positions. Test it from the button, the interior switch and the remote afterwards.

Why did it stop working?

The tailgate loses its stored calibration whenever the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat, so it no longer knows where its end stops are. The lock/unlock sequence restores that memory. It’s an expected side effect of losing power, not a mechanical fault with the motor or struts.

Do I need a tool or a dealer visit?

No — the whole procedure is done from the remote control, standing beside the car. There’s no diagnostic tool, no touchscreen menu and no workshop appointment involved, so it costs nothing and takes only a few seconds once the doors are shut.

My Stelvio has a manual tailgate — does this apply?

No — this re-initialisation only applies to Stelvios fitted with the optional power tailgate. A manual tailgate has no motor or stored open/close positions to relearn, so there is nothing to reset; you simply lift and close it by hand as normal.

Does the ignition need to be on?

The routine is triggered from the remote with the car locked up and the doors closed, so you don’t need to sit in the driver’s seat with the ignition running. Just make sure the fob has a good battery and you’re standing close enough for a reliable signal.

How will I know it worked?

After the sequence, the tailgate should open to its full height and close completely in one smooth movement at a single press, with its obstacle detection working normally. If it still stops short or moves in stages, repeat the sequence and check every door is properly shut first.

If the tailgate stopped after a battery disconnection, our Stelvio battery disconnect/reconnect guide lists it among the items to re-initialise.
