Reset the Maintenance Minder (Oil Life)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk8 (CP/CS) 2008-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The North American Accord (CP sedan, CS coupe) uses Honda’s Maintenance Minder: a wrench symbol, an engine oil-life percentage, and letter/number service codes. After an oil change you clear it yourself with the SEL/RESET knob — no tool needed.

This is the North American Accord. For the European Accord (CU/CW, 2008–2015) see the European guide.

How to reset the Maintenance Minder on a Honda Accord (2008–2012)

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (II) without starting the engine.
  2. Push and release the SEL/RESET knob repeatedly until the engine oil-life percentage is displayed.
  3. Press and hold SEL/RESET for about 10 seconds — the oil-life figure starts to blink.
  4. Keep holding for another 5 seconds; the service code(s) disappear and the oil life resets to 100%.

On cars with navigation, hold SEL/RESET for 10 seconds until the multi-information display asks you to confirm, then press SEL/RESET to select OK (or the INFO/arrow button to cancel).

Only reset after the service is done. Clearing it early leaves no accurate record of what the car needs. Honda also specifies a brake-fluid change every 3 years regardless of the Maintenance Minder.

What the service codes mean

A main letter appears with one or more sub-numbers — B1, for example, means jobs B and 1 are both due.

  • A — replace engine oil.
  • B — replace engine oil and filter; inspect brakes, steering and suspension.
  • 1 — rotate tires, check inflation and condition.
  • 2 — replace the air cleaner element and cabin (dust and pollen) filter; inspect the drive belt.
  • 3 — replace the transmission fluid.
  • 4 — replace the spark plugs; inspect valve clearances.
  • 5 — replace the engine coolant.

Frequently asked questions

What does the wrench light on my Accord mean?

It is the Maintenance Minder signaling a service is due, not a fault. Read the oil-life percentage and the letter/number code beside it to see exactly what the car needs.

What does “Service B1” mean?

Two combined jobs: B is an oil and filter change plus a brake and chassis inspection; 1 is a tire rotation and pressure check. “A1” is an oil change (no filter) with the tire rotation.

Does resetting fix a warning?

No — it only clears the service reminder. If the check-engine light is on, that is a stored trouble code needing diagnosis, which you can look up on autodtcs.com.
