To change the wiper blades on a Honda Civic Mk10 (FK, 2016–2021) you first put the wipers into their service position so the arms lift clear of the bonnet. Honda uses a neat trick — hold the wiper stalk in MIST while switching the ignition on. Here’s how.
The service position — you may also hear it called the maintenance or winter position — swings the wiper arms up to the top of the screen and holds them there so you can work on the blades. It’s the mode to use when you renew the blades, stand the arms off the glass in frost so the rubber doesn’t freeze to the screen and tear as you drive off, or clear leaves and snow out of the scuttle at the base of the windscreen. On the Civic this is a deliberate feature rather than a fault; the car simply lifts the arms clear because you can’t reach them where they normally rest.
Why There’s a Service Position
The Civic parks its wipers low against the scuttle, with the arms partly tucked under the rear edge of the bonnet for a clean look and better airflow. That low resting point leaves no room to hinge the arms up by hand — try it and the arm presses against the bonnet, which can bend the arm, tire its spring, or chip the paint. The service position raises the arms past the bonnet edge first so they swing away freely on their own pivot.
Before You Start
- Close the bonnet and check the wipers are parked before you begin, so the arms have a clear path up.
- Be ready at the ignition. The trick relies on holding the stalk as the ignition goes to ON, so have your hand on the stalk first.
- Free any frozen blades. If the rubber is iced to the glass, lift it gently by hand first or the motor can stall trying to move it.
- Have the new blades ready so the arms don’t stand on the bare screen longer than necessary.
- Work one arm at a time and keep fingers clear of the linkage while the wipers move.
How to Set the Civic Mk10 Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed and the wipers are parked.
- Turn the ignition off (LOCK).
- Hold the wiper stalk in the ‘MIST’ position (push it up/towards you for a single wipe) and, while holding it, turn the ignition ON.
- The wipers move up to the service position and stop.
- Lift the arms off the glass and renew the blades.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
Once the new blades are fitted, fold the arms back down so they rest flat on the screen. Then operate the wipers (or cycle the ignition) — they sweep back down to their normal parked position. Run a single wipe to confirm they’re seated and sweeping cleanly before you drive.
If It Doesn’t Work
- Didn’t hold MIST while switching on — the stalk must already be held in MIST as the ignition reaches ON; let go too early and it won’t register.
- Wrong ignition sequence — start from LOCK (off), then hold the stalk and turn to ON; going straight to ON without holding the stalk skips the trigger.
- Bonnet open — close it fully so the arms have room to rise.
- Blades frozen — free them gently first, or the motor may stall against the ice.
- Wipers weren’t parked — let a wipe finish so the arms are at rest before you switch off.
- Nothing moved — return to LOCK and repeat the hold-MIST-then-ON sequence from the start.
Changing the Blades / What to Expect
With the arms raised, hold the arm up as you release the old blade so it can’t spring back onto the glass — a bare metal hook dropping onto the screen can crack it. Most blades here use a common clip or hook fitting that releases with light thumb pressure; slide the old one off, click the new one into place, then lower the arm gently back down. Give each blade a light tug to check it’s locked before you cycle the wipers.
