To change the wiper blades or lift the arms off the glass in winter on a Kia Niro Mk2 (SG2, 2022–present), the arms need to be in their service position — standing up clear of the bonnet edge. If you just switch off, the arms park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them and where there isn’t room to unclip a blade or stand an arm on its spring. Raising them to the service position gives you full access to both blades and lets you flip the arms away from the screen. It’s a normal built-in feature, not a fault, and on the Niro it’s triggered from the wiper stalk within a short window after you shut the car down. Here’s how to raise them.
Why There’s a Service Position
When you power the Niro down, the wipers drive to the bottom of the screen and tuck below the trailing edge of the bonnet. That keeps them out of the airflow and clear of the driver’s eyeline, but it also leaves the base of each arm sitting against the bonnet lip and the plastic scuttle panel. Try to peel an arm up from there and it fouls the trim, so you end up levering against the paintwork — and force can bend the arm or chip the trim. The service position avoids that by first sweeping the arms up to the top of the glass, well clear of the bonnet, and holding them so you can lift them the rest of the way on their pivots. On a hybrid like the Niro it’s worth remembering the car can be silently ‘on’ even without engine noise, so always confirm it’s fully shut down first.
Before You Begin
- Make sure the bonnet is closed and latched — the arms need the full height of the screen to sweep into.
- Confirm the car is genuinely out of READY and switched off — a hybrid can be running-quiet, and the trigger only arms after shut-down.
- If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them first so a stuck blade can’t stall the motor or tear the rubber.
- Have the new blades ready so you’re not wrestling a sprung arm while you search for parts.
- Work one arm at a time and keep a hand on each arm you raise.
How to Set the Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed.
- Switch the car off (out of READY/ignition off).
- Within about 20 seconds, hold the wiper stalk in the ‘MIST’ position (push it up/towards the single-wipe) for about 2 seconds.
- Release — the wipers move up to the service position.
- Lift the arms away from the glass to change the blades or clear snow.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
When you’re done, fold each arm gently back down so the blade rests flat on the screen. Then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they sweep through and re-park in the normal resting spot below the bonnet. Give the glass a quick wash-wipe afterwards to check the blades sweep cleanly and sit where they should.
If the Wipers Won’t Lift
- You missed the 20-second window — switch off and try again promptly.
- Hold the MIST position a full 2 seconds — a quick flick just does a single wipe.
- Confirm the car is fully shut down — if it’s still in READY the mode won’t arm.
- Make sure the bonnet is fully closed so nothing blocks the arms’ travel.
- Free any frozen blade before retrying so the motor isn’t fighting ice.
- If nothing happens, power down again and repeat the sequence from the start.
Changing the Blades
With the arms upright, hold each arm firmly as you work — a wiper arm is under strong spring tension and will snap back against the glass if it slips, which can crack the screen. Niro blades generally use a common clip or hook fitting: press the release tab, slide the old blade off the arm, and clip the new one on until it seats with a click. Once it’s on, lower the arm slowly onto the glass rather than letting it drop. Check both blades sit flush before you send the arms back to park.
