Disable the Start-Stop System

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mercedes E-Class Mk5 (W213) 2016-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On the Mercedes E-Class W213 you switch off the ECO start-stop system with the dedicated button near the center console. The start-stop symbol disappears from the display and the engine stops cutting out at a halt.

The setting is temporary. It resets to on every time you restart the car.

How to turn off E-Class start-stop

  1. With the engine running, press the ECO start-stop OFF button (marked with the “A” in a circular arrow).
  2. Check that the start-stop warning light goes out and the symbol clears from the instrument display.
  3. The engine will now keep running when you stop; press the button again to re-enable the system.

Because the system re-arms at each engine start, there is no factory menu toggle to keep it off permanently. A permanent change requires aftermarket coding and is not reversible from the dashboard.

Why does my E-Class start-stop turn back on?

By design. Mercedes resets ECO start-stop to active at every restart for emissions reasons, so you press the button again each drive if you prefer it off.

If a warning light stays on or a fault code appears afterwards, you can look the code up free on autodtcs.com.
