Check the Engine Oil Level

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mercedes Sprinter Mk3 (W907/W910) 2018-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The third-generation Sprinter has no dipstick, so the engine oil level is read electronically through the instrument-cluster on-board computer. Check it regularly to protect the OM654 diesel, and top up promptly if the reading falls towards minimum.

  1. Park on firm, level ground with the engine at operating temperature, then switch the ignition on and follow the cluster prompt (engine running or freshly switched off, as the display requests).
  2. Using the left steering-wheel Touch-Control buttons, open the on-board computer and scroll to the “Service” menu in the cluster.
  3. Select “Engine oil level” (Motoroliepeil) and confirm to start the measurement.
  4. Wait while the cluster measures, then read the result against the minimum and maximum marks shown on screen.
  5. If the level is low, add oil in small amounts through the engine-oil filler cap in the engine bay, re-measuring between top-ups. Do not overfill.

Good to know

Total oil capacity for the OM654 2.0-litre diesel is about 10.0 litres on rear-wheel-drive Sprinters, and roughly 8.0 litres on front-wheel-drive versions. Use only a Mercedes-approved oil meeting MB-Freigabe 229.51, 229.52 or 229.71 — the 229.71 grade is recommended for the lowest fuel consumption.

Oil consumption can reach up to 1.0 litre per 1000 km, and tends to be higher while the van is new or worked hard, so check the level often — for example weekly or at every refuel.

The cluster also shows an oil-change or service prompt automatically when a change is due. That is the ASSYST PLUS service-interval system and is a separate job from this level check.

FAQ

Does the Mercedes Sprinter have a dipstick?

No. The third-generation Sprinter has no dipstick — you read the oil level electronically through the “Engine oil level” item in the cluster Service menu.

How much oil does the Sprinter OM654 take?

About 10.0 litres on rear-wheel-drive vans and around 8.0 litres on front-wheel-drive versions for the 2.0-litre OM654 diesel. Always confirm the level with the electronic check rather than pouring in a fixed amount.

What oil grade does the Sprinter need?

A Mercedes-approved oil meeting MB-Freigabe 229.51, 229.52 or 229.71. The 229.71 specification is recommended for the lowest fuel consumption.

Why does the reading need a warm engine on level ground?

Both conditions improve accuracy. Warm oil has settled to its normal viscosity and a level van lets the oil sit evenly in the sump, so the cluster measures the true level.
