A Mini Cooper F56 (and F55 five-door, 2013–2024) remote that has lost its range or gone unresponsive almost always just needs a new coin cell. The Mini fob hides a mechanical key and the battery behind it, so the swap is quick once you know the order. Here is the full job, plus why a replacement key has to come from Mini.
Battery First
The F55/F56 fob uses a CR2032 coin cell, fitted positive (+) side facing up. A weak cell is behind nearly every “Mini remote not working” complaint, so fit a fresh one before suspecting the car. The fob holds a pull-out mechanical key that opens the driver’s door if the remote is dead.
Replacing the Fob Battery
- Press the button and pull out the mechanical key from the fob.
- Remove the key cover, then remove the button-cell cover underneath.
- Lift out the old cell and fit a new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Reassemble in the reverse order (cell cover, key cover, mechanical key).
- Test that the remote locks and unlocks.
Lost Key or Adding a Spare
A battery swap retains the existing coding. If a key is lost or broken, a replacement can only be ordered from a Mini dealer, and programming a new fob requires a diagnostic tool through the car’s security system — there is no owner sequence.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help
- Check the cell is positive-up and seated fully — the usual reason a swap doesn’t take.
- Hold the fob against the start button to start the car if the remote won’t respond (the Mini reads it directly).
- Still dead? A receiver or footwell-module fault may store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Mini F56 key fob use?
A CR2032 coin cell, fitted positive-side up.
Do I need to reprogram the fob after the swap?
No — the coding is retained for a battery change.
Can I buy and program a new Mini key myself?
No — a replacement key must be ordered from Mini and coded with a diagnostic tool.
Does this apply to the 5-door F55 and Convertible F57?
Yes — the F55, F56 and F57 share the same fob and CR2032 cell.
If the remote stopped responding after a battery disconnection, see our Mini F56 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
