Reinitialise the Electric Sunroof

These instructions apply to the Mini Cooper Mk3 (F55/F56) 2013-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the panoramic sunroof on your Mini (F55/F56, 2013–2024) has stopped opening or closing with one touch, stops part-way, or refuses the tilt/slide function, the roof controller has lost its calibration. It happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or when the roof has been forced or run out of sync. Re-initialising it is a quick job you can do yourself in under a minute, with no tools.

Why the Sunroof Loses Its Calibration

The roof module needs to know exactly where the fully-closed and fully-open positions are so it can run automatically and stop if it meets resistance (the anti-trap safety function). When power is interrupted — most often a battery disconnect — the module clears those references as a precaution. Until you re-teach them, the roof only inches while you hold the switch, and one-touch open/close is lost. This is exactly why the battery procedure on the F56 lists a sunroof initialisation as a follow-up step.

Before You Start

  • Make sure the battery is well charged — the relearn will not complete on a weak battery.
  • Check the roof and its track are clear of leaves and debris so the glass can reach both end stops cleanly.
  • Keep hands and objects clear of the opening — during the relearn the anti-trap protection is not active.

How to Re-initialise the Mini Sunroof

  1. Start the engine (the roof relearn wants a solid power supply).
  2. Press the roof switch to the close position to make sure the glass panel is fully shut.
  3. Press and hold the switch in the close direction.
  4. Keep holding for about 30 seconds — the roof will make a short automatic movement to find its end stops.
  5. Continue holding until the sliding roof stops moving on its own, then release.
  6. Check the operation — the one-touch open, close and tilt should now work normally.

The 30-second hold is the key step: release too early and the module will not store the end positions.

If the Sunroof Still Won’t Auto-Operate

  • You released the switch too soon: repeat and keep it held the full 30 seconds until the roof stops by itself.
  • Weak battery: the relearn needs a healthy battery — charge it and try again.
  • Dirty or dry tracks: grit or a dry runner stops the roof seeing a clean end stop. Clean the channels and apply a suitable silicone lubricant, then retry.
  • Just did a battery job: that is expected — the roof relearn is one of the follow-ups in our Mini F56 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
  • Roof drains blocked: if the roof has been slow or sticking because of water ingress, clear the sunroof drain channels — a common Mini issue — before relying on the relearn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the Mini sunroof?

No. The relearn is done entirely with the roof switch as described. A scan tool is only needed if a genuine roof-motor or module fault is stored.

Why did the sunroof stop working after I changed the battery?

The roof module loses its end-stop references during a power loss as a safety measure. Re-initialise it with the 30-second hold and full function returns.

Is the anti-trap working during the relearn?

No — that is why you must keep hands and objects clear of the opening while teaching the end stops. Full protection returns once calibration is complete.

The roof tilts but won’t slide (or vice versa) — same fix?

Yes — the single relearn re-teaches both the tilt and slide end positions. If only one function is affected afterwards, repeat the procedure with the battery fully charged.

While you are re-teaching after a power loss, also check the windows — see our Mini F56 electric window reinitialisation guide. To clear a service reminder, see the Mini F56 service indicator reset guide.
