If your automatic Mini (F55/F56, 2013–2024) is stuck in Park and the gear selector will not move — usually because of a flat 12 V battery, a blown fuse or a shift-interlock fault — you can release it manually so the car can be rolled or towed onto a trailer. This guide shows the emergency park-release procedure for the F56 automatic. It is a get-out-of-trouble step, not a repair, so fix the underlying cause afterwards.
When You Need This
On an automatic, the gear lever is normally locked in P until the car has power, your foot is on the brake and the electronics release the shift-lock. If the battery is dead or a fault stops that happening, the lever stays in P and the car cannot be moved — the parking pawl is engaged in the gearbox. The emergency release lets you select neutral mechanically.
Safety First
- Block the wheels before you release the parking mechanism — once it is in neutral the car can roll freely.
- Only do this on level ground, or with the car already secured on a recovery vehicle.
- Keep the brake applied throughout where possible.
How to Release the Mini Gear Selector from Park
- Block the wheels and press and hold the brake pedal.
- Access the release mechanism at the base of the gear selector (you may need to lift the trim around the selector).
- Pull the securing clip upwards and disconnect the connector.
- Push the lever down, then move the gear selector to position R.
- Pull the release lever up, then move the gear selector to position N (neutral). The parking pawl is now released.
- Reconnect the connector and refit the securing clip.
- The car can now be rolled or winched. Keep it chocked or braked until it is secured.
After the Emergency Release
This only frees the car — it does not fix what caused it. The most common reason is a flat or failing 12 V battery; once you have power back, the selector works normally again. If the battery was the cause, see our Mini F56 battery disconnect/reconnect guide. If the battery is healthy but the lever still will not release under power, a shift-interlock or selector fault may be stored — look up the code on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my automatic Mini stuck in Park?
Almost always a flat 12 V battery or blown fuse that prevents the shift-lock from releasing. A brake-light switch or selector fault can do the same. The emergency release gets you moving; the battery or fault still needs fixing.
Is it safe to do this myself?
Yes, as a recovery step, provided you chock the wheels first — releasing the pawl lets the car roll. Do it on level ground or once the car is on a trailer.
Will I damage the gearbox?
No — the emergency release is a designed function for exactly this situation. Move the selector gently and reconnect everything afterwards.
The lever moves but the car still won’t roll — why?
Make sure you reached neutral (N), the electronic parking brake is released, and the wheels are unblocked once you are ready to move. If the EPB is stuck with a flat battery, that needs releasing too.
