Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mini (F55/F56, 2013–2024) — the third-generation hatch, including the Cooper and Cooper S — is a routine job, but because it is BMW-based there is one important catch: a new battery must be registered with the car’s power management, and the windows and sunroof need re-teaching afterwards. This guide covers the safe order of work and what the Mini needs once the leads are back on.
Where the Battery Is
On the F55/F56 the battery is in the engine bay (under a cover). Lift the cover to reach the two clamps. The F56 uses an AGM battery as standard — replace like-for-like, never with a cheaper flooded battery.
Before You Disconnect
- Note your radio presets and user preferences.
- Turn the ignition off and ensure all electrical consumers are switched off; take the keyless fob away from the car so it powers down.
- To keep settings alive, plug in a memory-saver. The steps below assume you are not using one.
- If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, disconnect the battery and wait at least 1 minute before handling those parts.
Disconnecting — Correct Order
- Turn the ignition off and take the fob away.
- Open the bonnet and reach the battery.
- Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear, tucking it aside.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
- If removing the battery, undo the base clamp and lift it out upright.
Reconnecting — Correct Order
- Refit the battery and secure the hold-down clamp.
- Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
- Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.
What the Mini Needs Afterwards
- Reset the date and time and re-enter your radio presets and preferences.
- Re-initialise the electric windows — the one-touch is lost until you re-teach it (see our Mini window guide).
- Re-initialise the sunroof if fitted.
- Register a new battery (important). If you fitted a new battery, the F56’s power management must be told via a diagnostic tool, or it will mismanage charging and start/stop will not work. Registering the same capacity/type is essential on these cars.
If a Warning Light Stays On

- 10 mm and 13 mm spanner/socket for the terminal clamps and hold-down.
- Optional memory-saver to preserve settings.
