Turn Off the Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Mini Cooper Mk3 (F55/F56) 2013-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic start/stop system on the Mini (F55/F56, 2013–2024) switches the engine off when you stop and restarts it as you pull away. It trims fuel use in town, but many owners find it intrusive in traffic. This guide shows how to turn start/stop off on an F56 Mini, and why the car re-enables it every time you start up.

How Start/Stop Works on the Mini

The system only stops the engine when a set of conditions is met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is well charged and properly registered, the climate demand is satisfied, and you have the clutch up (manual) or your foot on the brake (automatic). On a cold morning or with the climate working hard it may do nothing — that is the system behaving as designed. When it cuts the engine, a green “A” with a circular arrow appears.

How to Turn It Off — The Toggle Button

  1. With the engine running, find the auto start/stop button — on the F56 it is one of the toggle switches in the centre of the dash, marked with an “A” and a circular arrow.
  2. Press the toggle once.
  3. The warning light in the button illuminates, confirming the system is now switched off.
  4. The engine will idle normally at a standstill.

Press the toggle again to switch start/stop back on.

Why It Comes Back On Every Drive

By default the toggle only disables start/stop for the current drive cycle — switch the ignition off and on and the Mini re-enables it, because the system counts toward the car’s official emissions figures. On the F-series Mini the default state can be changed so the car remembers “off”, but that requires coding the relevant module with a BMW/Mini-capable tool (for example via Bimmercode). Coding is at your own risk and may not suit cars that must meet specific emissions rules.

Start/Stop Stopped Working? Check These First

  • Battery state of charge low — the most common reason.
  • Battery replaced but not registered — on the Mini an unregistered battery keeps start/stop disabled until it is coded to the car.
  • Engine or cabin not yet at temperature — climate demand keeps the engine running.
  • A stored fault — a battery-management or engine code can disable start/stop silently. Check what a code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make “off” permanent on a Mini F56?

Yes, unlike many cars — the F-series Mini can be coded to remember the last start/stop state, so it stays off. It needs a BMW/Mini coding tool; the physical toggle alone only lasts for the current drive.

I fitted a new battery and now start/stop won’t work — why?

Because the battery was not registered. Until the power management is told about the new battery, it holds start/stop disabled. Register it with a BMW/Mini tool.

Is it bad for the engine to keep restarting?

No. The starter and AGM battery are designed for it, and the system blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.

Why does the “A” symbol have a line through it?

That means auto-stop is temporarily unavailable because a condition is not met (cold engine, low battery, climate demand). It resumes once conditions allow.

If a low or unregistered battery is the cause, our Mini F56 battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers replacing and registering it.
