Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Megane Mk4 (XFB) 2016-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Renault Megane Mk4 (2016–2022) is a simple engine-bay job. This guide covers safe disconnection and what to re-teach afterwards.

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, under a cover. The petrol (TCe) and diesel (Blue dCi) Megane has no high-voltage system to worry about.

Disconnecting

  1. Switch the ignition off, keep the keycard out of range and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
  2. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead aside.
  3. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp.

Reconnecting & Re-teaching

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last.
  2. Reset the clock/date; the R-Link/EASY LINK screen reloads on its own.
  3. Stop & Start may sit out for a drive or two while the battery monitor relearns — normal.
  4. If a tyre-pressure warning appears, re-learn the pressures — see our Megane TPMS guide.

A like-for-like battery doesn’t need coding on the Megane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which terminal first on the Megane?

The negative (−) first, and reconnect it last.

Does the Renault Megane battery need coding?

No — a matching replacement just goes in.

Will I lose my radio?

No code is normally needed — just reset the clock.

Why is Stop & Start lazy after this?

The battery-charge monitor needs a few drives to relearn; it returns to normal.

For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our Megane Mk4 service reset.
