To change the wiper blades on a Skoda Octavia Mk4 (NX, 2020–present) you first move the wipers into their service position so the arms lift clear of the bonnet. If you just switch off, they park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them. It’s a quick stalk routine.
Why There’s a Service Position
The Octavia parks its wipers tucked below the bonnet line for aerodynamics, which makes the blades awkward to reach and risks bending an arm against the bonnet. The service position raises them so they swing away freely.
How to Set the Octavia Mk4 Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed.
- Turn the ignition on, then off.
- Within 10 seconds of switching off, push the wiper stalk down (the single-wipe direction).
- The wipers move up to the service position and stop there.
- Lift the arms off the glass and renew the blades.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
Fold the arms back down onto the screen, then turn the ignition on and operate the wipers briefly — they return to their normal parked position.
If It Doesn’t Work
- Waited too long — the stalk only commands service position within about 10 seconds of switching off; switch off and try again promptly.
- Bonnet open — the function expects the bonnet closed.
- Blades frozen — free them gently first, or the motor may stall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Octavia wipers lift off the screen normally?
They park below the bonnet line. Put them in the service position first, using the stalk within 10 seconds of switching off.
Do I need any tools?
No — just the ignition and the wiper stalk.
How do I get them back down?
Fold the arms onto the screen, turn the ignition on and flick the wipers — they return to park.
Can I damage the arms by lifting them at the parked position?
Yes — forcing them against the bonnet can bend an arm. Always use the service position.
