Disconnect & Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 6, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Alto Mk7 (GF) 2009-2014.

The 12V battery on the Suzuki Alto (2009-2014) sits in the engine bay. Disconnect it in the right order to protect the electronics.

Disconnect

  1. Switch everything off and remove the key.
  2. Undo and remove the negative (−) terminal first; tuck the cable clear.
  3. Remove the positive (+) terminal.
  4. If lifting the battery out, undo the hold-down clamp and keep it upright.

Reconnect

  1. Fit the battery and clamp (if removed).
  2. Connect positive (+) first, then negative (−); tighten both.

Afterwards the clock resets; let the engine idle for a minute to settle. The Alto uses a small 35 Ah battery – match the original’s capacity and terminal layout.

Frequently asked questions

Which terminal first? Negative off first; positive on first.

Will I lose the radio code? The Alto’s standard radio is not code-protected, but the clock and presets need resetting.

Chasing a dashboard fault code instead? Look it up on autodtcs.com.
