When you switch the ignition on, the Suzuki Alto (GF, 2009-2014) briefly lights most of its warning symbols as a bulb check, then they go out once the engine starts. A light that stays on is telling you something.

Red lights – stop and check
- Brake (!): parking brake still applied, or low brake fluid. If it stays on with the handbrake off, check the fluid before driving.
- Oil can: low oil pressure – stop the engine as soon as it is safe and check the oil.
- Battery: the charging system is not keeping up (alternator or belt).
- Seatbelt / door: a belt is unbuckled or a door is open.
Orange / amber lights – get it checked soon
- Engine (check-engine): an engine-management or emissions fault is stored. Have the code read.
- Power steering (EPS): electric steering fault – the wheel gets heavier.
- ABS: anti-lock fault; normal braking still works.
- Immobiliser / key: the key is not recognised and the engine may not start.
The photo above shows the Alto cluster during its ignition-on bulb check, with the symbols briefly illuminated.
Frequently asked questions
A light stayed on – can I keep driving? Red means stop and investigate; amber usually means drivable but get it checked soon.
How do I find the exact fault? Read the code from the OBD-II port – it pinpoints what is behind an engine or ABS light.
