The Vauxhall Astra K (Mk7, 2015–2021) — Opel Astra — has a Stop/Start system that switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. Pull up with the brake held and the engine falls silent; press the clutch or accelerator and it fires straight back up — a normal economy feature, not a fault. If you’d rather keep it running in traffic, on a hot day, or before working in the engine bay, you switch it off with one button.
How It Works on the Astra K
Most Astra K models are manual, so the engine stops when you come to rest in neutral with the clutch released and restarts the moment you press the clutch; automatics stop with the brake held. Either way the engine control module only cuts the engine when it’s warm and the 12 V battery has charge in reserve. A battery-monitoring sensor decides whether a clean restart is guaranteed, which is why a tired battery is the most common reason it stops working.

If the Engine Won’t Stop — or Won’t Stay Running
If Stop/Start is on but the engine keeps idling at a stop, the Astra is holding it running deliberately. Work through the common reasons before assuming a fault:
- Weak or ageing 12 V battery — by far the most frequent cause on this generation; the system needs a healthy charge to promise a restart.
- Cabin not yet at temperature — heavy heating or air-con demand keeps the engine running.
- Engine still cold — it won’t stop until it’s up to normal operating temperature.
- Not in neutral — on a manual the engine only stops with the gear lever in neutral and the clutch released.
- On a slope — a noticeable gradient can make the system skip the stop.
- Bonnet open — the engine will not auto-stop with the bonnet catch released.
- Very cold or very hot weather — extremes keep the engine on to protect comfort and the battery.
Once It’s Done
Once switched off, the warning light stays lit and the engine idles as normal at every stop for the rest of the journey; the setting returns to on next time you start the car. If the engine never stops even when everything looks right, have the 12 V battery load-tested — a marginal battery is the classic cause here, and it can pass a basic voltage check while still being too weak for the charge sensor.
